I'm going to be honest: I am fascinated by Thomas Kinkade discourse.

Because, for the life of me, I don’t know why people hate his paintings so much. They are the most inoffensive art pieces ever created, and yet so many people react to them with absolute revulsion, hatred, and vitriol.

I wouldn't even consider myself a Thomas Kinkade fan. I think some of his works are pretty good. Others are merely average. At the worst, most of them are bland and ordinary. Nothing really worth getting riled up about.

And yet, so many people seem to have an irrational knee jerk reaction to his art. I can get being offended by art that is meant to offend, from crosses in jars of piss to giant dumps of poo on the American flag. Because that type of artwork is offensive. That art was made to offend and disgust and revolt people.

But, fam, how does anyone look at a cozy cottage in the middle of a woods at sunset and think to themselves, "this is the most offensive art I have ever seen!" How does anyone looks at Kinkade's art and claim that "these paintings make my corneas hurt" or "they make me want to puke" or insist that Kinkade is "the George W Bush of art"?

Again, I can’t wrap my head around the reason why. I can understand being offended by art meant to be offensive, but to be offended by something that’s otherwise inoffensive…again, that fascinates me. Why are people so offended over things that are not offensive?

The "Snug Harbor" title of this painting is a fictional place that simply refers to that safe place you go at the end of the day.
