Summary:

So, King is Jade's best friend ever since they were tiny children. Uea was Jade's college roommate.

Early on at Uni, Uea went out for drinks at a bar and was hit on by King. But just as Uea was starting to respond, a girl came by and grabbed King, and Uea thought King was hitting on him while there on a date with this woman.

Uea hates cheaters and unfaithful people, wholeheartedly. It is cruel, it is disrespectful, it is vulgar.

The next day, Jade introduces him to King.

Jade has no idea why Uea hates King, he just does. As for King, it is a mix of wanting to tease Uea (just because that is his nature), and also, Uea looks down on him. Uea is rude to King, so King responds in kind.

The reality of the situation in college is that the girl wasn't really his date. They were each other's "If nothing better comes along". Hunting buddies who will fuck if each doesn't find a partner. By the time Bed Friend takes place, Gun is his hunting-buddy-without-bemefits.

King also doesn't appreciate Uea looking down on him just because he enjoys sex and isn't conservative like Uea. King wants to be Uea's friend, he wants to get along, but so long as Uea sticks his nose in King's business, King is struggling to balance his attraction to Uea with indignation.

But King and Uea are kind of at a truce because of Jade. They don't want to upset him, he desperately wants his two best friends to get along, so they bite their tongues around each other. Jade also doesn't push them to getting along. He knows they are compromising for his sake.

I read the novel because the part of the show that never made sense to me was King assaulting Uea by having sex with him when he was well beyond his ability to consent.

King is depicted as being very sober (which could be an acting issue or it could be because of laws around how law or traffic violations can be depicted (read the tags if you're confused by that sentence)), but assaulting a drunk Uea is SO contrary to EVERYTHING else about his character, it never made sense to me.

King... pieces together a lot, but there is a lot he has no way of knowing until Uea is ready for him to know it.

And as far as if he's Dominant, sometimes, if King is a very, very good boy, Uea lets him think he is.

I think it's more that he is a man in his 20s...

Uea frequently refers to King as a sex addict, but he does manage like 8 months of forced celibacy.

The main reason, in the novel at least, that Uea limits their sex is because when King gets going, his stamina is no joke. King loves to play with Uea's body, he cares more about Uea's pleasure than his own.

Whenever King and Uea hook up, it is nearly an all night affair. King only stops when Uea waves the white flag, leaving Uea exhausted at work.

Uea doesn't deny the sex is good and King has him begging for it all night long, but man needs SLEEP. So their sex is limited.
