That is not necessarily true.
Several kings had exceptional Kingsguard; we simply know more about Aerys IIβs because so many of them played major roles during Robertβs Rebellion and appear throughout the main story.

I've been thinking a lot about how the Kingsguard is portrayed in fics and ig what it reveals about how the fandom views them. I think it's sort of fascinating, that people would like them to be just the coolest knights of the realm but as an institution they were designed to suck and it creates an interesting meta-textual tension.
There's always a desire to fix things to contend with but so much about Aerys's kingsguard especially is taken at face value. How many positive depictions of Oswell Whent are there, when his only appearance in the book is telling Jaime in a flashback that they aren't supposed to protect Rhaella? AUs love constructing perfect Kingsguards, often treating the entire thing very lightly, and not like a lifetime commitment that alienates them from their family and other people. For me the funniest pick, and the most telling, is always Blackfish, both bcs of an assumption that a gay man would really love a chastity vow, even tho he dodged marriage the regular way his entire life but also bcs in the books, he abandons his duty to fight for his family! The type of characters people want in the Kingsguard are, just like Jaime, unsuitable to be actual canon Kingsguards.

Do you think Daemon I Blackfyre promised Fireball that he would be the Lord Commander of his Kingsguard?
We don't know for certain. We do know that Fireball was given a senior theater command because he was mentioned to lead Daemon's army to impressive victories in the Westerlands. The Lord Commander of the Kingsguard frequently represents the king as senior commander in war. Daemon, like Robert during the Ironborn Rebellion, was present in the war but he could not be everywhere at once. That Fireball was chosen suggests a great deal of trust in his ability both as a warrior and as a general, which is exactly what you want in a Lord Commander.
We don't know for certain, but there's enough evidence that Daemon saw qualities in Fireball that would lend him to being the Lord Commander.

I love Ser Barristan. In AGoT, Janos Slynt is like "we will get him" and then he kills some gold cloaks and "sneaks away." But later we learn from Jaime that he took time to write about being dismissed from the Kingsguard in the White Book.
Do you think he killed them with the pen? He left his sword behind. I'd love it if he killed them with the White Book itself, like John Wick, but that remains in the tower and he was said to have fought the Gold Cloaks in the stable, so that's a bummer.
