#kincade fire

My family and friends are all under mandatory evacuation in Sonoma County, as the Kincade Fire continues to ravage towns and encroach on cities.

My brother is just one of thousands of firefighters attempting to save homes and prevent the blaze from spreading. While speaking with him yesterday afternoon, he mentioned he'd been working constantly since 6 am. of the previous day. Since yesterday, he's only managed 4 hours of sleep.

During the Tubbs Fire in 2017, he'd send photos of his "meals"- which mostly consisted of energy bars and caffeinated drinks- and his "naps", which were often taken on the ground.

It's easy to take for granted the smaller scale incidents that our firefighters assist with on a daily basis, but when faced with an immense threat such as the now 66,000 acre Kincade Fire, it really puts into perspective just how much time, effort, and human power goes into protecting our communities. Over 4,000 firefighters are currently battling the large fire in Sonoma County.

Many, if not all, are working on very limited sleep and with little time for themselves. They assist people who didn't, or couldn't, evacuate. They rescue animals who got lost or left behind. They enter homes on the fire lines to ensure nothing inside the residence has caught fire. They move items and debris away from homes to prevent easy ignition when fires draw near. All while risking their own lives in an effort to prevent the fire from spreading.

Our firefighters make it their job to help us. Saying "Thank You" is the least we can do. ♥️

Amazing that injuries and deaths (any?) are minimal, telling me that evacuation orders are issued earlier, people are hearing them and acting instead of ignoring them, the first responders are doing their jobs really well. We learn our lessons, sometimes painfully, but we learn.
