honestly i don't think it implies much of anything when it comes to sam's relationship with john. sam tends to have a strong reaction when he feels like his decisions are being called into question and i think it's more about that (and the situation in general) than anything. but if it were to imply something about john, i think it's more likely that it implies that john didn't hit sam and how dare martin think otherwise.

and how this probably came shortly after his time at sonny's and how dean is probably omitting some truths here about how he knew that he was never going to have what other sixteen year olds had and it was less about embracing the life and more about thinking he didn't have a choice

sam: so you're saying i'm not actually at the bottom of the winchester family hunting hierarchy? [broken in an entirely different way] great!

dean was a burdened kid and he was jealous of sam because john cared enough about sam to want to protect him. he never got saddled with responsibility.

all of these things are true but they're not the whole truth. sometimes it's just so obvious that while the brothers grew up together, they had vastly different (though equally traumatizing) childhoods.
