Truthfully Virgil was terrified at the very prospect. There was a reason each nanny didnât last long, and Virgil had heard enough horror stories about the Ackroyd boys to avoid them at all costs when he had worked in the past. Hell the only reason he still got some to come in now and then was because the job was so high paying. Mr. Ackroyd knew exactly what he was doing advertising with all those zeroes, he was reeling in any nanny who would skip talking to peers at the sight. And now by some twist of fate that very bait was dangling above Virgil, and even worse there wasnât anyway he could feasibly afford to ignore it. A sigh escaped his lips as he looked the man in the eye, âI think it is more than a generous offer that I would be happy to accept.â
(Virgil becomes the newest nanny for his very attracti- for Logan.)

Virgil was burning up. He wasnât sick or anything, but the nerves surrounding this date had every nerve on fire to the point he was surprised he hadnât melted into a puddle. Was it possible to get heat stroke while blasting AC in a car? If not, heâd likely be the first victim of such insanity. There was just too much riding on tonight. Sure, romance was on the line- but more than that, his job was on the line, and so were his relationships with Loganâs sons.Â
Because what if he did something so horribly stupid tonight that left Loganâs fancy suit covered in fancy dinner? Surely, heâd be fired on the spot. And just like that, no job. No money. He wouldnât see the twins or Patton. Janus would lose some friends. Janus would never get his own room. Heâd-
âAre you okay?â
The deafening silence that was swirling around Virgil began to splinter at the sound of his nephewâs voice. Glancing in the rearview, he could see that Janus had looked up from the book he had been reading- was it too dark to be reading that now? The sun was beginning to set, so he shouldn't be straining his eyes. Virgil opened his mouth to tell his nephew so when he saw Janus frown, âSo youâre not okay.â
âNo-no! Iâm fine. Iâm fine! I was just going to say you should stop reading for now. But Iâm fine!â
âYou said that three times.â
âBecause itâs three times the truth.â
âThat doesnât make sense.â
âWell, yes, um⊠it doesnât matter. I'm fine, Janus.â
âNo, youâre not. Are you worried about your date?â
âA- a little- just the tiniest bit. Itâs been a while since I was even on a date.â
âWas that with the guy who cheated on you?â
âW-what? What?â Virgil sputtered.Â
âWhen I talked to Mom this morning, I told her you were going on a date. And then she said that the last guy was really mean, and he cheated on you, and he made you cry. So she said itâs now my job to watch out for you âcause sometimes you have bad taste like she does. But Mr. Logan is nice, so I donât think you need to be nervous.â
Virgil gave a long and heavy sigh before he couldnât help but smile, âWell, Iâm always grateful to have you on my side, Jan⊠But what else did your mom say about me? Or my past boyfriends?â
âNothing really,â Janus shrugged (to Virgilâs relief). âJust that you should take her advice more.â
Virgil gave a frown and mumbled to himself, âDid she tell you sheâs a hypocrite too?âÂ
âWhatâs that mean?âÂ
Apparently, Janus had good hearing. Good to know. âIâll tell you later,â Virgil said, pulling into Loganâs driveway. âFor now, letâs head inside.â
Inside the home, Virgil found Logan in the family room talking with three other staff members, likely talking about watching the children for the evening⊠Virgil wished them luck. Upon realizing their arrival, Logan turned to grave Virgil with a small, slight, barely there smile, which somehow made Virgilâs knees feel like goo. He was dressed nicely (as always)- Loganâs attention snapped back to the few he was speaking to, and hushed voices were heard as they crowded Logan before they abruptly shoved Logan in Virgilâs direction.Â
Virgil was about to comment on it, when he noticed that in the second he had turned around Loganâs perfect hairstyle had been messed up the tiniest amount in what was clearly an intentional way. Perhaps those three werenât discussing babysitting at all, had he asked them for advice? The mental image was one Virgil couldnât help but smile at.Â
âYou look nice,â Logan said with a nod.Â
âYou as well, I-â
âMr. Logan?â Janus interrupted.Â
âWhat can I do for you, Janus?â Logan asked, redirecting his attention. âIf youâre looking for my boys, theyâre in Romanâs room.â
âOkay! But first, whatâs âhypocriteâ mean?â
Virgil gave a heavy sigh as Logan answered the question. âA person who says one thing then does another. Like if I told you to eat your vegetables but I never do. Does that make sense?â
Janus pondered for a moment or two before he nodded and turned to Virgil, âThen my momâs one for not listening to you but wanting you to listen to her?â
ââŠShe listens sometimes.â
âNo, she doesnât. Iâm gonna go upstairs to play. Have fun!â
When his nephew disappeared, Logan let out a slight chuckle, âIt sounds like you two are having quite⊠intellectual conversations.â
Virgilâs huff in reply only made Loganâs smile widen, so he turned away. âLetâs not miss our reservation.â
Dinner did not go as planned.Â
Despite arriving at their reservation early- their table had apparently been given away which led to waiting. And upon finally being seated their waiter took the drink and appetizer orders and then promptly ignored their existence. The drinks had eventually found a way to them, but as time passed Virgil had the sneaking feeling that the appetizers would never come. This was only proven correct as the waiter vanished from the floor entirely, and according to the whispers of employees in the dining room- he had left the building entirely. Virgil couldnât help but want to be a tad nosier, but he caught Loganâs amused gaze.Â
âAny more info?âÂ
Virgil shook his head as he sipped at his near-empty water, âNothing I can hear from here. But sorry, I forgot what I was saying.â
âI donât recall myself,â Logan admitted. âI was staring at the couple behind you who received their meal. We have been here far longer than they have.â
âDoes the food look good, at least?â
âAs hungry as I am, everything does. I neglected to eat lunch today.â
âWhat? Why?â
âI was distracted by the boys and pulled in different directions. I had to make some calls, and then I had a meeting over Zoom. Ultimately, I didnât even realize I had missed a meal until I began to get ready. So I simply ate an apple to tide myself over until dinner.â
âThatâs not like you at all.â
âI agree. But I digress; how was your day off with Janus?â
âGood, good. I had told him to pick what we would do today, so we ended up at one of those pottery places where kids can paint the pieces. He was very meticulous over a few pieces of dish ware. He wanted a perfect matching set.â
âThatâs adorable,â Logan smiled. âIâve wanted to take my boys to do that, but I have a feeling that Remus would break far more than heâd paint. But he also wouldnât take kindly to me just taking Roman even if I took him elsewhere.â
âYeah, I can see that.â
âWhat did you paint?â
âI chose a shark piggy bank because⊠because it was there? Anyway, I made it purple with different colored polka dots because it annoyed Janus.â
âBrilliant reasoning.â
âI think so.â
âYou-â
Loganâs words and Virgilâs train of thought flew off the tracks at that moment as a server walked by, holding a tray of dishes that looked beautiful but also smelled divine.Â
âAs good as that looks, I regret not choosing a place I am familiar with,â Logan frowned. Apologies.â
âDonât apologize; you had heard good things about it. It seems like this is an off day. And I appreciate the thought process that we could try something new together.â
âWhy do I sense a but coming?â
âHowever,â Virgil started because it was a different word than âbut.â âIt is clear we are both starving, and itâs also clear that our food will never get here considering we still have menus. So, would it be such a bad idea to go elsewhere? I know a hole-in-the-wall a few blocks away with the best tacos Iâve ever had.â
Logan didnât speak for the longest moment. Rather, his piercing eyes stared into Virgilâs as he folded his hands and sat up straighter in his seat. And in that moment Virgil couldnât stop the strike of fear that shot through him as he wondered if he had accidentally insulted his date- if he had offended his boss. Logan had put in all this effort for tonight and yet, Virgil just wanted to throw it away. He opened his mouth to quickly amend his statement, but Logan spoke first.Â
âCouldn't you have said that ages ago? Do they have quesadillas?â
Virgil gave a slight sigh of relief, âReal good ones.â
âNo point in bothering for the check, itâll take forever. Iâll leave more than enough cash for the drinks. Lead the way.â
The food was wonderful, and with it in their stomachs, conversation flowed easily. It was almost scary how easily Virgil forgot he worked for Logan. Right now, they werenât boss and employee; they were just two (severely overdressed) guys on a date, and that was perfect. There was something alluring about just watching Logan be Logan. Just in the way he spoke and expressed himself as if trying to remain reserved but in the same way allowing Virgil to see his true expressions underneath. Virgil had always known how nice it was to listen to Logan speak of his children, but it was just as nice to hear him speak about his life and dreams. And even nicer was how smoothly he came up with ideas on how to integrate Virgil into them. It was a first date unlike any Virgil had been on, and as Logan took his hand as they walked back to the car- Virgil couldnât have been more thrilled with that fact.
Roman was a big boy! He was a brave prince who didn't cry because of a silly boo-boo! But he fell off his bike and skinned his knee and it hurt so much! Why did he think he could ride without training wheels? He was sitting by the pavement next to his stupid bike, crying like a baby!
And it was worse when his brother found him. He knew Remus would make fun of him. Remus was mean to him all the time! That big jerk had that stupid jerkface smile when he came up to him. But to Roman's surprise, it fell.
"What happened Pissy?" Remus asked and poked his lip. Roman hurt his knee really badâhe would need a big bandaid, maybe two! Roman whimpered and hid his face in his hands.
"Can you get up?"
Roman shook his head.
"Can you scream?"
Roman shook his head.
"Then I'll scream for you!" Remus said with determination. He adjusted his stance and shrieked, screaming at the top of his lungs.
"Remus!" Patton gasped as he ran out of the house. He raced to his boys, praying that Remus didn't get hurt too badly and cursing himself for leaving them alone for five minutes. The bathroom waits for no one!
"What happened, kiddo?âRoman!" Patton gawked when he reached the twins. Remus was standing next to his brother in a power stance, ready to scream again. But Roman was weeping and he had skinned his knee.
"C'mere, kiddo," Patton said and knelt by Roman, "Let's get you cleaned up." Roman sniffled and let his dad pick him up. Patton got up and looked at Remus with a small smile.
"Can you bring the bike to the garage, please? Once Ro is all cleaned up, I'll get you boys some ice cream."
"Ice cream!" Remus cheered and picked up the bike. He kept shouting that as he ran up the driveway, wheeling the bike along. Patton chuckled at his antics and followed close behind. He winced when Remus slammed into the garage door with a thud.
"Ow!" he whined and rubbed his forehead. A bruise was already forming. But he was still smiling and excited for ice cream. Patton had his work cut out for him.

âRoman, five more minutes of tv before bedtime.â Logan sets a timer next to the tv before heading back to the kitchen to finish up the dishes.
âButtttt, Papa, Daddy always lets me stay up. This isnât fair.â Roman pouts and whines and clings to the couch.
âHey! That isnât true. Nice try though.â Virgil comes up from the basement holding a basket of clean laundry. He plants a kiss on Loganâs lips before going to Roman, âItâs nearly bedtime, little prince.â
âBut Iâm not tired.â Roman hides between one of the couch pillows, occasionally peeking out to see if his dads are still there.
âA good sleep schedule is very important for a growing little boy, especially on a school night.â The tv clicks off. Logan moves the pillow to reveal Romanâs hiding spot, âIs there anything we can do that you come upstairs without a fight?â
âI want a bedtime story!â Roman cheers and jumps off the couch. He reaches up for Logan and does the little grabby hands to signal he wants to be picked up, âWith dragons and princes and ummm magic!â
Logan scopes Roman into his arms and heads to Romanâs room. Right before following them up, Virgil snaps a picture to always remember how adorable his husband and son are.
After plopping Roman onto his bed, Logan picks out a bedtime story for him, âHow about the story about how the prince rescues his lover from the dragon?â
âI love that story!â Roman giggles and pulls his plushie closer to him.
âOnce upon a time the was this mean old dragon who lived in solitude in his abandoned castle.â Virgil starts to vividly narrate the story, âBut life in solitude gets boring. He flew to the nearest village when his eyes landed on the prince of the kingdom, Ronan, and his lovely boyfriend, Jack. He swoops down capturing Jack in his talons before flying back to the falling apart castle.â
âNoooo!â Roman whines, âGive Jack back you stupid dragon.â
Virgil passes the book to Logan, âAs the dragon made it back to his castle, Ronan started making his plan to save Jack. He gathered his sword, shield, and magic potions then started on his hike for the dragonâs castle. For five long days and five long nights, Ronan marched until he found the castle guarded by the large fire-breathing dragon.â
âHe storms to the door and screams, âLET GO OF MY BOYFRIENDâ. The dragon being a dragon said no, go away little prince.â Virgil continues dramatically telling the story. âSince the dragon would not agree to diplomacy, Ronan grabbed his sword and laced it in a stunning potion. As hard as he possibly could, Ronan threw his sword right for the dragonâs neck. The second the sword hit him, the dragon froze in place.â
âRonan rushed into the castle to search for his love. In the distance, he heard soft whimpering. âJack, Iâm coming to save you!â He followed the sound to the end of the hall where Jack was trapped in a cage and crying.â Logan flips the page, âThe second Jack saw Ronan his face lit up. âYou came to save me!â Jack cheered. As soon as Ronan broke the lock to the cage he scooped Jack into a tight embrace, âIâll always come to save you.â The prince and his boyfriend head back on their long journey back to the kingdom. Ronan cast a spell over his kingdom to stop any other dragons from entering.â
In unison Virgil and Logan finish the story, âAnd they lived happily ever after. The end.â
Roman yawns and holds his plushie tighter. Logan tucks him in and Virgil kisses Roman on the forehead, âGoodnight Roman. We love you.â Roman falls asleep before Virgil could even finish his sentence.
âNow for the hard part of the night,â Logan whispers to Virgil, âTrying to get Remus to bed.â
âThat can wait 10 minutes.â Virgil takes Loganâs hand and leads him back downstairs to the couch, âHow about we watch tv, relax, and cuddle for a few minutes until we find and catch Remus.â
âSounds good, Virge.â Virgil leans his head on Logan as Logan wraps his arm around him. 15 minutes pass and they both hear little footsteps running between them.
âDid you two forget about me?â A teary voice asks, âUsually you come to struggle to put me to bed by now.â
âWe could never forget about you, Rere. We just wanted to give you a few more minutes to play before we came to get you.â Logan hands Remus a tissue.
âI thought that you abandoned me or maybe I was the last person alive.â Remus attaches himself to Virgilâs leg and starts to hysterically cry.
âHey, little duke. We are right here and will never abandon you.â Virgil takes Remus off his leg and holds him securely near his chest, âLetâs get you to bed. All that crying must have tired you out.â Remus weakly nods, hiding his face in Virgilâs oversized hoodie.
Logan and Virgil take Remus up to his room, the one right across from Romanâs. While Virgil tucks him in, Logan checks on Roman to make sure heâs asleep.
âBut what if I have another nightmare tonight?â A sad and tired voice asks his parents.
âYou can always come to our room and wake us up.â Virgil hands Remus his octopus plushie and turns on the nightlight, âSlept tight. Goodnight we love you.â
Logan tucks him in tightly, âNow the monsters wonât be able to get you.â
They leave the room, keeping the door slightly ajar. âDoes this ever get easier?â Virgil collapses into bed next to Logan.
âProbably not but adopting these two is the best decision we ever made.â Logan pulls up a picture of the baby twins from the day they were adopted.
âYeah, it is.â Virgil smiles at the memory, âI love them both with all my heart.â
For the first night in a while, the house is silent and all four Sanders have a peaceful nightâs sleep.
