A cheerful hum escapes the psychologist, the dayâs logs playing out on her terminal for her amusement. It was the end of an empty day on the job: only two appointments were held, and both were routine wellness counsels with long-term clients. She had even had time for an extended lunch period and afforded herself a trip to Plikterâs, where she just so happened to acquire these observation logs.
âIt was a humorous jest! I wasnât serious.â
âLeaving. Going home.â
âWeâre-- Wait, no--â
It was her practice--negative, her duty to her patients that she conduct occasional surveillance on them in their lively habitats. The measure was most often reserved for the especially evasive or otherwise unreliable patients, and her most recent client certainly ranked high among them.
âBut-- I havenât-- Grrrh.â
âHavenât what? âŚPlease donât.â
âNothing. Just. Donât disappear again.â
Nimble claws shatter the snack-stick at its midsection, the sweet ooze-coated half crunching merrily between her pointed teeth. The asura pauses the recording, and leans back in her skelk-hide chair to study the terminalâs freeze-frame. There wasnât much to see, given that the golemiteâs vigil was conducted from the depths of a barside potted plant; but past the leaves were fractured impressions of the asura beyond them. It had clearly been a busy night at Plikterâs, but her subject was standing in such a way that his distinctive markings were easily made out from the crowd.
Tapping the more fortunate half of the snack-stick to her nose in thought, she reaches a toe to replay the last few seconds. An intrigued grin crosses her face, half-lidded amber eyes shining.
âOh, Gerik⌠You really are too daft for your own security, arenât you?â
The remainder of the log plays itself without further interruption, and the psychologist watches without surprise or shame to its completion. Just as she had reached to terminate the playback, a knock came from the door. She straightens her seating and rolls her eyes, âSpeak of the Disaggregator. Yes, I am in here, you have found me!â
âItâs me, to correct you,â came an unexpected voice, practiced and steady, though light with a telling femininity. The door cracked open, politely enough that the speaker only poked her head through. âCan you spare me a moment of your time, Psychologist?â
Taqq lifts her ears and offers the familiar asura a smile, rotating the chair fully. âFor you, Magistrix, of course.â
Her guest dips her head in a show of appreciation, and closes the door behind her. The psychologist notes the language of her approach, the sullen demeanor emanating from beneath the self-enforced air of authority. She understood from Kezzaâs days as a patient that she was not a deceitful individual, and had determined that the Magistrixâs emotions never fell far from the surface. She wondered what good it would do for her particular career, until she learned that Kezzaâs honest nature and empathic tendencies served the business of public relations quite well. Who better to promote the Inquestâs fabrications than someone who earnestly takes them to heart?
âI realize my visit exceeds your usual hours, but it cannot be helped. There is not the luxury of time. I.. seek your counsel on a personal matter.â
âDoes this regard the dependency on stim-shots?â
âNegative.â
She nods, and places her elbows on the desk, providing her full attention. âPlease, make yourself comfortable. I do keep chairs in here for a reason.â
Her offer bounces off stiffened ears, folded back into brown hair. The officer shakes her head, and paces instead to lean against an adjacent seat with her hands supporting her against the armrests. There she sighs, and the psychologist allows her the space to speak by offering only quiet expectation.
âIt.. Regards the Disaggregator. Gerik.â
âYes, I am familiar.â
Another sigh from the Inquest, this time giving noticeable slack to her shoulders. A few moments of composure pass, through which the psychologist sits respectful and impassive.
âI..â Kezza starts, losing the words and struggling to reclaim them. Itâs only when she shuts her eyes and finds a grounding breath that she continues, âI have discovered I harbor attachment to him.. Attachment which exceeds that of professional cooperation.â
Taqqâs ears twitch, and she offers a gentle nod of understanding. Either with a concurrent sense of frustration or in simple response, Kezza scowls in distaste at her own admission, her arms lifted as she searches her palms. âIâve come to recognize the influence he has over me, and Iâve been searching for an explanation.. Some cause, a pattern to reason, anything,â Her fingers seize, gripping air, until the tension is lost, and her arms drop uselessly to her sides.
The psychologist watches her, until the length of silence between them inevitably terminating at her turn to speak.
âWell, he is the male you spend a significant, if not a majority, of your time with. Emotional bonds between a male and female are a natural result of prolonged exposure.â
The Magistrix folds her ears back as though caught in a lie, âIâve experienced attraction to females as well, that doesnât--â She stops, something in the psychologistâs expression halting her.
âIs there another individual you spend equivalent time with?â
Kezza finds herself unable to reply. Of course there wasnât-- As her second in command, Gerikâs presence was near constant. Her own partner saw less of her than he did. Whether it was field work, or routine number crunching, he would never be out of at least communicator range. Even at the dayâs end, they would both be among the last to return to their personal domiciles. No one else proved as dependable and dedicated as the Disaggregator in their devotion to the Magistracy.
âWhy do you suppose that is?â Taqq pressed, gently maneuvering herself past the Magistrixâs lowered defenses. Whether this soft spot would prove sore had yet to be seen, though an experienced intuition would suspect it.
âWorking alongside him couldnât suffice as causation alone,â She shook her head, a searching frown pointed to the floor. âHis vices are distasteful, and I experience agitation, impatience in his presence.â
Taqq hums, and leans back in her chair. Her modulated tone is lightened by a kind smile, âIt seems to be..â
The Magistrixâs frown lifts to target the doctor, sharpened with a defensive edge. The expression softens the psychologistâs, who leans forward with surrender and a gentle encouragement.
âKezza, listen.. Itâs very common for the context of a krewe to give rise to these feelings, and I imagine the metakrewe is no exception. And considering how the two of you work together so closely, and when heâs as attractive as he is..â
âYou find him attractive?â Kezzaâs snout wrinkles a bit with her skepticism, though deciphering the psychologist was never easy. Taqq leaned back again, and met her gaze with a sudden potency.
âDonât you?â
Kezzaâs mouth hitches open to reply, but the only sound that comes is a defeated sigh. âThatâs what I came to figure out.â

((Chronologically, this encounter would take place the night before this entry is recorded {if this encounter is canonical-- I'm undecided}. I originally begun it as a response to the asks "It's complicated.." which I regrettably never answered.
Though I don't suppose this is a completed work, it is long overdue in its place in the story, and as an ask response. It totally falls to pieces at the end, and that's really my primary regret. BUT I've had it sit around on my desktop long enough, so I'm posting it now and calling it done, typos and all. How much am I going to regret not re-reading it))

[A datacrystal from the private quarters of the Magistrix, dated from the previous week]
[The datacrystal sparks eerily, but seems to stabilize after some calibration. The aural playback hums to life with static, and the Magistrix's voice cuts through after a few seconds]
"...unimaginable. The destruction seems almost incalculable once you cross the exclusionary zone. My instruments are reporting malfunction despite the chaos shielding and mesmeric amplifiers. âŚI should revise the specifications of my Magi-Ionization Polarizer to compensate for these new measures.â
[Coarse shuffling implicates the Magistrix as already making adjustments. The noises fade behind an uproar of static that lasts for several moments before subsiding]
â..of this magnitude. I would take it as an honor were it not for the circumstance of my position and expertise which left myself as the only viable candidate. I am thankful for it.. Administration sent this order at a most optimal time. Without their clearance, I doubt I could manufacture the opportunity for myself without lifting suspicion. Or if I even would have consideredâŚâ [Her tone steels itself] âNevertheless, I cannot allow personal curiosities to distract from my assignment.â
[Several minutes pass in relative silence, the occasional shuffling or footfalls breaking up the constant background static despite its increasing in volume]
âIâm experiencing difficulty in, holding my defenses.. I-Iâve arrived at the Internal Monitoring sub complex. The mission briefing detailed the terminal access, though Iâve not observed anything meeting the given descriptors.â [A sudden pause, lasting longer than the Magistrix seems to account for. She continues as though the pause was absent] âThere is a visually obscuring brume in this wing. Itâs physicality is irregular, sometimes giving the illusion of moving figures, at once appearing both colorless and saturated in red violet. I hypothesize it is responsible for the dysfunction of my instruments, as well as the onset of disruption leveled against my mesmeric defenses. Iâve just re-verified my coordinates and determined the reroute. ETA, six point seven minutes.â
[A loud rush of static strains the aural playback, threatening to cut the recording. The Magistrixâs voice re-emerges after no more than four minutes, though the static muffles her]
âLocation confirmed. Iâm accessing the terminal now.â [The distorted beeps and key presses come through sharp and jagged] âExcelsior! Objective met; now translocating data files to personal storage crystal and eradicating target directories. All firewalls re-enabled, security measures set to reinitialize at disengagement.â
[Dulled footfalls and an irregular buzzing occupy the background of the static. Briefly held rhythms to the noise are reminiscent of conversation, and the Magistrixâs voice stammers under the interference. Despite auditory distortion, anxiety is evident in her tone]
âPrimary objective complete. Queuing secondary coordinates to approximate navigation.. Maintaining mesmeric shielding at seventy-four point two percent. Reporting systems failure on tertiary projection amplifiers.â
[Another pause as she seems to consider the situation. The static scratches and strains the playback.]
âThe Inner Chambers, ETA thirteen minutes. I cannot afford hesitation.â
