Hi, I'm Key/Kris (she/they/it). I'm twenty-two and disabled, so finding and keeping a job is extremely difficult. While I'm strapped for cash and trying to move into a new house, I decided to open up moodboard commissions!

(I've never done something like this before lmfao)

I will be doing them in slots to avoid backlog, because that'll burn me out faster than anything.

I don't really want to leave the account dead, I've just been having a hard time irl and it's been a doozy.

Anyway, since I'm more than a little fried, if anyone wants to send me some ideas for prompt lists, go for it! Pretty sure the ask box is open.

as you can expect, there’s a lot of weeb stuff in there! I kinda want to show some of it like all those cool artists but honestly, I’d be MORTIFIED to put it on the internet so I’m just talking about it here:

I’ve always doodled (mostly dragons, dinosaurs and other animals) but only started keeping my drawings when I started drawing humanoids - which was around age 12, thanks to the power of, you guessed, it, ANIME! And also videogames. Final Fantasy was huge back then and the first manga hit our bookstores, so that’s where most of my inspiration came from. Final Fantasy, Naruto and all that good weeb shit lol as well as some more obscure things (surprisingly, very few Zelda fanarts actually survived the times) - and only CHIBI and FANART. I only began to draw non-chibis a few years later, and that’s also when I started making original characters! I remember my chibis being very popular back then and honestly... I still don’t get why, I don’t think they’re particularly cute but maybe I’m just judging my own stuff too harshly.

Also, I had much more of a distinct style back then - which ... is I guess not THAT weird, considering I stuck with what I could do and had fun with it? That changed a whole lot over time, now I feel like no two pictures of mine look like the same person drew them.

My approach was also MUCH different then - I drew whatever came to mind or “happened”, and not just my favourite subjects - so I’ve drawn characters I didn’t even particularly care about, I just doodled, thought “huh, that kinda looks like XYZ”, and made it into XYZ!

What’s interesting to me is that while I definitely doodled mostly very plain and simple poses and expressions in the beginning, I never did the “draw the hands behind the back” thing. Never. If my image required hands, I bit the bullet and DREW the hands. If you expect that I soon became an expert of drawing hands, you’d be very very wrong, I still struggle with them but I still don’t avoid them. Not sure why I’m like that with hands but not with perspective, backgrounds and other stuff? Anyway, I’m proud of you, little me, why can’t you be that adamant about every challenge...

If you want to know at which point I started to improve: obviously that’s a continuous process but I DO notice some pretty big leaps in the beginning coinciding with 1) surrounding myself with other artists and 2) actively studying anatomy surrounding myself with other people who drew inspired me obviously - not just by way of giving me ideas or desires to draw things in different ways, but also, and this is HUGE and probably way underestimated - by talking to them (not just about drawing at all! Mostly about the things we shared a love for, like our fandoms), bouncing ideas off of each other and just being generally silly. That’s where a lot of ideas came from that I wanted to draw, which then provided a challenge. Bottom line: just have fun, I guess. ditching my Chibi Comfort zone was very freein as well, and I picked up basic, somewhat natural looking anatomy pretty quickly. Now, refining that into a more realistic, convincing style I still haven’t achieved but if you learn to really LOOK at things, draw from life and reference, you’ll improve a lot!
