Good news, functional-object fans! (I don't get the appeal personally but live your life!) A new border treatment debuting soon makes any small motif worked in thread into a remarkably durable key fob.
A Badge Border with open corners (there's also a filled version) creates an almost-invisible, double-reinforced loop in each of the Patch's four corners (triple-reinforced if you also use the corner of the Colour A pinstripe, as seen in the second photo). That's it in the cutaway diagram above, and yes it's identical to the tried-and-true Blanket Border except for how the corners of the one Colour A (black/grey) round are handled.
The samples are all done with #10 cotton crochet thread and a 1.50mm hook, and the motifs are each 11x11 mesh spaces (msps) before borders—I wouldn't go much larger for a key fob! (Here are all my motifs 12x12 and under — For a larger motif, I'd think about using finer thread and an even smaller hook).
If #10 thread isn't available to you, three strands of six-strand embroidery floss is a very good substitute! (Use a 1.50-1.75mm hook). One skein in each colour, both split in half should be *just* about enough for a small motif and borders, but I suggest having a second skein of each, just in case. 2 strands is more like #20 thread (1.25mm hook), one strand more like #30 (1.00-1.25 mm).
