Fake letter irks Perak assembly speaker

Perak State Assembly Speaker Datuk Seri S.K. Devamany has hit out at the irresponsible individual who sent a letter purportedly from an assemblyman that he was quitting his party.

He said the move was aimed at creating tension in the state and described the action as “challenging the honour of the state legislative body and the country’s democratic system”.

“The august legislative body must not be played around with. The legislature, executive and judiciary are the three important branches of the government.

“But the action of the irresponsible individual is clearly challenging the democratic system that we have upheld all along,” he said.

PKR’s Hutan Melintang assemblyman S. Kesavan denied Tuesday that he had quit the party, as claimed in the letter addressed to the State Assembly Speaker.

According to the letter, supposedly signed by Kesavan, the action was taken as “he had lost trust in and was dissatisfied with the party’s leadership”.

Devamany said he had instructed his officers to lodge a police report Wednesday morning for the matter to be investigated.

“I hope such an incident will not create negative speculations as cooperation between the Barisan Nasional and opposition assemblymen in developing Perak has been good.”

Kesavan, when met after making a report at the Ipoh district police headquarters Wednesday morning, said although he did not suspect anyone, the matter involved his integrity and also that of his party and the state legislature. Therefore, it needed to be taken  seriously

Assemblyman Kesavan denies quitting PKR

Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) assemblyman for Hutan Melintang in Perak S. Kesavan has denied that he has left the party, as had been claimed in a letter addressed to the Speaker of the State Legislative Assembly.

Copies of the letter were made available to the media.

He said the letter was fake and sent by irresponsible quarters using his name.

“I have checked the letter. The signature is not mine and it is also not written using a letterhead designated for assemblymen for official letters,” he said when contacted by Bernama Tuesday.

He was asked to comment on the letter dated Feb 2 and addressed to Datuk S.K. Devamany, the Speaker, in which he is alleged to have declared that he had quit PKR voluntarily the same day (Feb 2).

In it, Kesavan was alleged to have said he was doing this because he had lost faith in the party’s leadership.

Kesavan said he was informed that a man claiming to be his representative had handed over the letter to the Speaker’s office on Tuesday.

“This is an attempt to smear my image. I will be contacting the Speaker to clarify this matter.”

He said the letter could be linked to the fact that his wedding ceremony was scheduled to be held on Feb 10 and the yet-to-be announced Kajang by-election in Selangor.

Meanwhile, Devamany, when contacted by Bernama, said his office received the letter, which was hand-delivered by a man, at 2.40pm Tuesday.

“This is not related to legislative and state assembly mattters,” he said, adding that his office would receive any letter addressed to it without considering whether it was   authentic or not.

Parti Keadilan Rakyat’s (PKR) Hutan Melintang assemblyman S. Kesavan was alleged to have quit the party after saying he was unhappy with the party leadership.

A copy of the resignation letter was shared on social networks, leading to various speculations by netizens.

The letter, dated Jan 2, 2014, was believed to have been handed to the Perak assembly speaker Datuk S.K. Devamany on Tuesday (Feb 4).

While media members are rushing to get in touch with Kesavan, the assemblyman responded to Utusan Online, issuing a denial on his resignation.

The daily’s online portal, however, did not elaborate on the denial, saying only that the Hutan Melintang state lawmaker did not submit such a letter.

Several PKR members have also denied the allegation, saying the letter was a fake.

Teja assemblyman Chang Lih Kang told The Rakyat Post that speculation about Kesavan quitting the party was not true.

“I spoke to Kesavan personally and he denied the speculation circulating about him resigning from PKR,” Chang said in a phone conversation.

He said Kesavan was also not aware of the resignation letter being shared on social networks. ”He is not resigning,” Chang said.

PKR communications director Fahmi Fadzil told The Star that the resignation letter’s letterhead did not match the official letterhead, insisting that it was a fake.
