I like the idea of Inumaki sort of being self-conscious about his seals but also kind of not
"Dude, you are going to get heatstroke," Maki warns.
"Bonito flakes."
Yeah, he's hot. Of course he is, it's 98° out. But they're sitting in the shade at least and Inumaki's not in the mood to take his uniform off.
Which sounds bad
It's seriously not like he hates the seals on his face. He's fine brushing his teeth in the mirror, he doesn't sleep with a mask on- it's just his face, after all. It's only the moment he takes a step out of his room that he feels the overwhelming instinct to hide.
"Hey, Inumaki, believe me. We're not pushing you to show us your face," Panda says, resting a paw on his shoulder. "You just really shouldn't be wearing that in this heat. Even a medical mask from Miss Shoko would probably be better."
Inumaki huffs. Maybe it's simply because the markings are such a dead giveaway to his technique. Having them out makes it easy, too easy for a sorcerer to walk in, see that and only that: a cursed speech user. The thought makes Inumaki cringe. Sometimes he's not in the mood to be just a cursed speech user.
Maki pokes him in the knee. "Would you rather end up in the infirmary or chill the hell out and enjoy your boba where literally no one else can see us?"
But... these are his friends. Fellow students who have gone through the effort to try and understand him through their language barrier and give it their all sparring against him. Panda helps water the garden on particularly lazy days. Maki sits and watches him cook dinner while she recounts her day out loud.
With them, it's fine. He unzips his jacket, his classmates finally looking satisfied as it falls onto the grass behind them. And if he does feel a whole lot more comfortable in his t-shirt, well. It's not like he has to tell them.
Sakura is so fucking funny fr. Imagine leaving the funeral home with your last relative's still-warm remains to see this guy you already DON'T like, SITTING THERE *CAMPING* for you and when you ask why the fuck he's doing that he basically says "Umm I can be wherever I want actually. I live here."
I love how wholeheartedly Makochi really truly does accept Sakura for who he is. Not 'we welcome you but you're a bit rude' or 'we accept you but you could get in less trouble' there is no accepting him despite his flaws, they love him exactly as he is. My favorite example of this is Sakura bursting into the classroom like "I DON'T GET WHY YOU'RE ALL SOOO INSISTENT ON BLOWING UP MY PHONE WHEN WE CAN JUST TALK HERE" and are they put off? Are they offended by his outburst? No Nirei says "damn someone's cranky today" and they move on!! Something something about how Sakura didn't need to get 'better' or meet them halfway to be accepted they just love him because he's Sakura

Still recovering from chapters 203/4, I decided to reread chapter 1 because it's still one of my absolute favorite chapters & episodes, and can you imagine how UNFAIR all that must've felt for Sakura? He only found out he was good at fighting because of all the terrible things that caused him to lose his shit in the first place- he was already an outcast before he threw a single punch. Then that outburst caused him to be even more isolated than before (not that he wasn't okay with it, but still), and then he comes to Makochi to immediately be treated normally AND ALSO witness the already established delinquents being praised. Can you imagine how insanely unfair it'd feel to have your entire self-worth betting on being king of the outcasts just to find out that said outcasts were actually not that bad off. Why couldn't that be him. Why'd he have to be suffering when the delinquents here were being treated like that.
