dune: part two // succession 2x10
The dynamic between Logan and Kendall, and between Walter and Jesse feels so similar in how both Logan and Walter function as fathers. Logan cannot unlove Kendall. Walter cannot unlove Jesse. And it’s the same reason for both. they love the broken them. They love the vulnerability. It’s not that Logan and Walter love to control them, it’s that these boys fulfill a need in them. Not in spite of the brokenness, because of it. These are people vulnerable enough to never fully leave but present enough to make the hold feel worth it.
Remember when Logan tells Kendall “you are not a killer.” It's possession. It’s Logan saying “I hate that you don’t have it but I love that you don’t have that instinct.” Walter does the exact same thing with Jesse constantly. He frames Jesse’s guilt, his emotion, his inability to be ruthless as weakness. But that’s also the thing that makes Jesse irreplaceable to him. Someone fully cold would have walked away for good. Jesse’s conscience is what keeps him in Walt's orbit. And that’s the thing neither Logan nor Walter can admit to themselves the fact that Kendall and Jesse don’t have that killer instinct isn’t actually a disappointment to them. They use it to put them down openly while internally it gives them the satisfaction of knowing they can always hold them.
Kendall betrays Logan over and over. Jesse tries to leave Walt so many times. But the hate is never intense enough to fully defeat them. Because the relationship has become the only context in which they understand themselves. Kendall without Logan doesn’t know who he is. Jesse outside of Walt loses the only place he ever felt like he mattered. And the most unsettling part is that Logan and Walter don’t fully have the answer themselves. They held something they love because it’s broken and they don’t have an answer to that. Walter thinks he is mentoring Jesse. Logan thinks he is toughening Kendall up. But that's just their way to keep them close.
