Other than that occasion, there was one incident that really stands out. One day early in my tenure as a second engineer, we were waiting for the band to arrive. He and I were standing out on the steps of the studio when Beatles manager Brian Epstein drove up in his Rolls. Because of all the girls gathered around the studio, the gates were closed, so he had to honk his horn to get security to go out to open the gate to let him in. In the meantime all the girls wanted his autograph, so he got out of his car and began to sign. George just looked at me and said, “That should be me.” I thought to myself, “Really? What an ego!” Yes, he had an ego, but I understand what he meant by that. He was the fifth Beatle, not Brian.
