She only spares a glance at the picture, and squints at the three alien creatures on it that mostly resemble common house cats, while being just off enough to unnerve the observer.

Elena’s eyes shoot open and she coughs.

Water tears out of her throat in violent, choking bursts and she rolls onto her side, hacking and gasping like her lungs have forgotten how breathing works. Everything hurts. Her chest burns.

Somewhere above her someone is kneeling over her.

Elena blinks up through streaming eyes. It’s night, she knows it is—she remembers the bridge, the water, the headlights—but everything is blindingly bright, like someone dragged the sun down into the trees.

“Am I… dead?” she croaks.

The blur above her doesn’t answer immediately. Elena squints harder at it, the light stabbing straight through her skull.

“…Are you an angel?” she manages.

The blur snorts.

“Oh, sweetheart,” she says, sounding deeply unimpressed. “You almost die and the first thing you do is assume the angel would look exactly like you? That’s incredibly self-centered.”

Elena frowns, confused.

She blinks a few times and the brightness finally resolves into something smaller—much smaller than the sun.

It’s just a cellphone flashlight.

And the woman holding it—Elena’s stomach drops. Dark hair. Same nose. Same mouth. Same face staring back at her like a reflection that decided to step out of the mirror.

The woman tilts her head, studying her.
