AEW Rampage: 04.28.2023
bask in his glory
Finding out that Sammy Guevara is hated backstage by Eddie Kingston, Andrade El Idolo, and got punched by Eddie and Andrade for being an asshole, is sorta funny. No wonder he's being paired with RUSH and put to LFI. 'Cause nobody wants to be paired with both of them, not anymore.
(Eddie and Andrade were suspended after punching Sammy.)
Speaking of asshole, remember when Preston Vance had a beef with Orange Cassidy in real life, Adam Copeland had to neutralize the situation? It resulted in Vance quietly leaving The Dark Order and LFI, and he was banished to ROH and joined the Frat House. However, the reason why he left LFI was unclear. Like, he was an asshole, but he'd rather not be in the same group with the worst assholes.
What I couldn't believe was that the whole thing with OC was very clear and bled into the ring. It's insane.
Now, everyone in the locker room and backstage is pretty much vibing with positive energy that they no longer have Malakai/Aleister Black, and everyone is going along just fine with others. And I think Sammy sorta learned his lesson, not to pissed your co-workers, especially the Latino ones.
Chris Jericho, who is notoriously controversial, is also the same, in that he'd rather keep things to himself, and being friendly to others is better to keep the positive energy. The same thing with Dustin Rhodes, who just came out as a MAGA, which is mind-blowing because he has a transgender son and is a big LGBTQ ally. Whether Sammy left Sons of Texas because Dustin supports MAGA, I dunno. But Dustin is getting along just fine with others, surprisingly.
I dunno about Kamille, though. But I knew that Mercedes requested not to be paired with her again when she found out that Kamille is a MAGA.
Jay Briscoe was known as homophobic when he was alive, but he turned his life around and apologized for all the suffering he caused before his death. And I think Mark Briscoe carried that sentiment after his death.
My point is this: sometimes your co-workers and people you work with aren't in tune with you; morally, personally, creatively, politically, and so on. But you can't fire them for being insufferable unless they are a danger to you and others. CMPunk was the case. He threatened Jack Perry and Tony Khan physically; of course, he was fired.
And I see comments about why RUSH is on your TV all the time while Nyla Rose isn't. There are complicated matters (which I personally disagree with and thought the decision was wrong), and it's usually down to Warner Brothers Discovery, which is transphobic and sees RUSH as marketable. It is money for them. There's nothing that Tony Khan can do (at the moment), even though he is a defender of Nyla. AEW is basically under a contract with WBD.
RUSH is a known pendejo, and he faced disciplinary and suspension actions MANY TIMES. I wouldn't be surprised that someday he might leave AEW (whether fired or let his contract run out). I feel like I'm not surprised to see his push because usually those problematic wrestlers get pushed for the last time before they leave (example: Malakai Black, Powerhouse Hobbs, Andrade El Idolo, Mariah May, CMPunk, etc).
Marina Shafir requested her best friend, Rhonda Rousey, to be featured and possibly hired by AEW. I think Tony was reluctant because she is very problematic and controversial, and would rather not have her in the company. But he relented because Marina had been good for the company. So he had her appear ONE TIME during a PPV. The results were polarizing: the hardcore AEW fans thought it was ridiculous and would rather not have her, Toni Storm also decided to take a break rather than face her, and many of the wrestlers were not happy to see RR. Only the casual fans were happy to see her. Tony had to make a decision, and he decided not to hire her as a permanent resident, especially after hearing the feedback. She might be back once in a while as a guest star, so I won't think of her much.
The best thing is this: give constructive criticism. Not harassment, insult, and threat. Calling Tony Khan racist, sexist, misogynist, and even using slurs against him is no use because the core of the problem is not him. Maintaining a harmonious ecosystem with various people in the company is not easy. The best the fans can do is to send constructive feedback to the company and the network. And the wrestlers need to realize that they are working in an office with people from different backgrounds and lives.
Keep telling them that you want to see Nyla Rose, especially during Pride Month. Bring back Keith Lee. More Women Wrestlers. More Black Wrestlers. More Japanese and Asian Wrestlers. More LGBTQ Wrestlers. Keep telling them all the time. AEW is not perfect; nothing is. But it's better than the alternative, and they are definitely trying to be good.
