Life isn't a story... There's no neat beginnings, no happy endings, because everything always keeps on going. That's just life, girl. That's all it is: life, and lives, and all of them lived overlapping.

Every time I visit the Silmarillion tag and see the *reams* of discourse going on there all I can think of is that quote by Richard Siken.
"Imagine that the world is made out of love. Now imagine that it isn’t. Imagine a story where everything goes wrong, where everyone has their back against the wall, where everyone is in pain and acting selfishly because if they don’t, they’ll die. Imagine a story, not of good against evil, but of need against need against need, where everyone is at cross-purposes and everyone is to blame."
That's the Silmarillion, to me. All of the tragedy, all of the bloodshed and death, is exactly that quote. It's the sense I get every time I read the book. And the fact that so much of the fandom is so zeroed in on making things simple and straightforward good-or-bad...I don't want to participate much. It's divorced from the power of the original tale: that, in spite of being nearly immortal elves with great power, the characters are all terribly flawed and terribly human. No one is innocent. No one's hands are really clean. That's the tragedy of the whole story, and what makes it so incredibly compelling.
