I love that Keenan has made very little appearances in Dinosaur Train but I still feature him waaayyyyyyy more in this blog than Tank Triceratops.
Thinking about it, the ending of Wicked Lovely is pretty tragic in a way for Aislinn.
Imagine you’re her. You’ve been taught to fear faeries all your life because you can see them. You find out that two of them are following you, and you investigate to find out the truth. You have such big hope that once you find out what they want, you can make them go away and go back to your normal life.
But no. It turns out that you’ve been chosen by the Summer King as part of some faery game, and he has stolen your mortality without your knowledge or consent. There is no going back to your old mortal life—your only options are to become a Summer Girl or pick up the Winter Queen’s staff and become either the Winter Girl or the Summer Queen.
Aislinn does not get what she wants in the end. She can only accept what was done to her and try and make the best of it. She does grow to love the Summer Court, but if she was able to choose, she would’ve stayed mortal and lived a regular life. Her becoming the Summer Queen is pretty cool, but it’s not something she truly wanted.
While her taking the test and becoming the Summer Queen does save the day, it’s a sad/bittersweet ending for Aislinn because she never really had a real choice about anything that happened to her. Once the Summer King stole her mortality, her options were very limited and once she realised that she was the missing Summer Queen, she had to take the test or the earth would keep freezing.
