And what if, after everyone returned to Hal's house and went to bed, Kattigan returned to Teor's corpse's side. And despite knowing it had no chance of working, and that even if it did it would be ultimately selfish, Kattigan tried in vain to spit on Teor just to bring him back.
And what if it failed because even in the fury of grief, Kattigan couldn't work up the raw contempt required to invoke the ancient magic. Even in the anger of Teor for getting himself killed and leaving Kattigan, his attempt to spit was to bring him back, an act of love- and it could never work for that reason.
And what if, knowing that he was alone once again, Kattigan retreated. Knowing the only two people who ever understood him were both dead, and in a position where he had no chance of rejoining them even if he fell himself.
