What's not to love about incredibly well fried breaded pork chops? Here, our view is definitely nothing and we love a good katsu in all of its forms. This week, we are off to try a katsu don place called Katsu Shin. There's a few branches around Taipei but we ended up in the one in Da'An. It's a pretty small place with just counter seating. It was relatively quiet the night we went so didn't need to wait for a seat. It's mainly set meals here so it didn't take too long for us to order or for the food to arrive.

This was our first set of aged pork tonkatsu on rice that came with a bowl of miso soup, some pickles, a bit of a quinoa and edamame salad and finally a fried tang yuan for dessert. The sides were all pretty standard, the edamame and quinoa salady thing was a nice touch. It was a bit of shame the tang yuan came so early; by the time we ate everything else and got around to it, it had gone pretty cold and a bit tough.

This is a closeup of the tonkatsu don. You can just about make out the fried egg that sits between the pork cutlet and the rice. There was a sweet teriyaki like sauce that was drizzled over it all which we weren't quite sure if we really liked. The pork itself was pretty well fried but we have to admit, we think we have had better in Taipei. Still, it was a pretty tasty bowl of food!

We also ordered some fried shrimps. Again, not necessarily the best we've had; they were a little bit on the skinny side, but still a very enjoyable little side to have.

We also had the katsu don with scrambled egg instead of the fried egg. This bowl was a lot saucier and wetter which is a good or bad thing depending on your own preference. The egg was slippery and silky rather than fluffy and the tonkatsu cutlet held up reasonable well and stayed pretty crispy.

All in all, this was a pretty good meal. The place is ideal for a quick after work dinner when you are looking for something quick, something pretty simple and something pretty tasty where you don't really have to think about what you want.
