Privileged brown women romanticizing patriarchal traditions while ignoring the suffering of other women
I absolutely despise these brown women, hailing from Privileged background, coming on internet, speaking English and using pseudoscience to whitewash the Patriarchal traditions such as karwachauth, wearing bindi, mangalsutra, ghoonghat, and HIJAB, etc, presenting them to western women as actually progressive and feminist, which apparently were designed by their wise ancestors millenia ago for protecting women's health, energy and vibes blah blah blah.
Upon confrontation they claim "it's just the people misinterpreting it"
Nope honey! It doesn't matter if people have just misinterpreted the original purpose(believe me they haven't). What matters is they're are used as tools of oppression for majority of women all around the world. Women are judged, shamed and punished for not following them. Wearing such things as fashion accessories and glorifying them is tantamount to normalizing what has been used as a tool of repression for thousands of years. By choosing to participate in these practices, You're not "just minding your business" or "harmlessly engaging in your private domain without forcefully imposing it on others." You're legitimizing these institutions where these practices come from, adding support to them, keeping their name alive and hence helping maintain the power structures that punish other women who refuse to conform.
Calling any such practice neutral or turning it into fun, while so many women are suffering under it at the same time is insensitivity at it's peak. It erases the experiences of those women who are punished and ostracized for not following those traditions. It ignores their trauma. It's cruel and selfish. Even if you don’t personally suffer the worst, your complicity helps ensure that others will. The only person misinterpreting is you.
There's no better example of this than privileged hijabi women calling it a choice while women in Muslim countries like Iran and Afghanistan are subjected to the most grotesque forms of violence, imaginable. Sexual violence, domestic abuse, forced marriages, acid attacks, religiously motivated femicide, social ostracism, workplace discrimination, public Harassement, denial of the right to education, psychological violence through indoctrination that they will burn in hell and so much more.
How dare you Privileged women romanticize these symbols of oppression!
Ask yourself if these practices were rooted in just enhancing women's lives then why are men never asked to follow Or is it, to you, men are gods, already perfect and above any improvement? That alone should be enough to reject your stupid justifications.
Moreover, your romanticization is selective. You cherry pick the practices that benefit you personally, fully aware that it’s impossible to whitewash every tradition. You draw the line of what’s acceptable exactly where you choose to follow, all while policing and silencing us for rejecting everything including the few you’ve decided to glorify, without realizing that religious fundamentalists would call you "too westernized' as well and punish you, first for not strictly adhering to your respective religions and then again for creating your own interpretations.
