پاکستان میں واقع ’براڈ پیک‘ کو کوہ پیمائی کی مہمات کے لیے انتہائی مشکل پہاڑوں میں سے ایک سمجھا جاتا ہے اور یہ دنیا کا 12 ویں بلند ترین جبکہ قراقرم کے سلسلے کا تیسرا سب سے اونچا پہاڑ ہے۔ اس کی بلندی 8047 میٹر ہے اور اسے براڈ پیک یا چوڑی چوٹی کا نام اس کے غیرمعمولی طور پر چوڑے ’سمٹ رج‘ کی وجہ سے دیا گیا جو تقریباً دو کلومیٹر تک پھیلا ہوا ہے۔ براڈ پیک ان 14 ’ڈیتھ زون‘ (انتہائی خطرناک بلندی والی) چوٹیوں میں شامل ہے جنھیں نرمل پرجا نے 2019 میں چھ ماہ سے کچھ زائد عرصے میں سر کیا تھا۔ سنہ 2022 میں نیٹ فلکس کی ایک فلم اسی نام سے جاری کی گئی تھی جس میں اس پولش کوہ پیما کی کہانی بیان کی گئی تھی جس نے اس پہاڑ کی چوٹی کو موسمِ سرما میں پہلی بار سر کرنے کی کوشش کی تھی۔ براڈ پیک کو پہلی بار 1957 میں سر کیا گیا تھا جب آسٹریا کی چار رکنی مہم چوٹی تک پہنچی تھی۔ اس کے بعد سے، جہاں سینکڑوں لوگ اسے سر کر چکے ہیں وہیں درجنوں اس دوران اپنی جان سے ہاتھ بھی دھو چکے ہیں۔ 2013 براڈ پیک پر مہمات کے لیے مہلک ترین سالوں میں سے ایک تھا جس میں کم از کم چھ اموات ریکارڈ کی گئیں۔ مارچ 2013 میں دو پولش کوہ پیماؤں کو جن کی عمریں 27 اور 58 سال تھیں، اس وقت مردہ قرار دیا گیا جب وہ چوٹی سے اترتے وقت لاپتہ ہوئے۔ چند ماہ بعد تین ایرانی کوہ پیماؤں کا بھی یہی انجام ہوا اور پھر ایک جرمن کوہ پیما پہاڑ سے پھسل کر ایک پہاڑی نالے میں گر کر ہلاک ہوئیں۔

North of Kashmir, and south of the Afghan-Chinese border, lie the high Karakorams - mountain ranges so bleak and arid that they have been described as "vertical deserts." In this part of central Asia - long a region of petty principalities - most of the small states have now been absorbed into Pakistan; only Hunza, ruled by Mir Mohammed Jamal Khan, retains some of its old independence. In notable contrast to the dark-skinned, brown-eyed people of the plains to the south, many of Hunza's 30,000 inhabitants have fair skin and blue eyes, a legacy perhaps of the army of Alexander the Great or Attila's White Huns. Hunza, with its several thousand square miles of spectacular mountain scenery dominated by 24,000-foot snow-capped peaks, has been likened to Shangri-la, for its inhabitants are unusually long lived. The Hunzakuts cultivate corn, wheat, and other grains in small terraced fields carved laboriously from the steep mountainside. They tend rich orchards of apricots, peaches, apples, and pears; grapes from the vines found throughout the orchards yield a light wine, and the fruit of the mulberry is fermented and then distilled to produce a potent arak. Horses and cattle are pastured in remote, lush meadows; hunting the antlered ibex, far above the snow line, is a favorite pastime and a topic for songs.
