Well, school has started, and when I see my kids heading off to school, I'm reminded of this shot of Lower Fox Creek Schoolhouse, near Strong City, Kansas. I captured it five years ago at the end of a summer day. I'd been in Topeka teaching a workshop and when I'd finished, it was such a nice day I decided to head out in search of a photo. This schoolhouse is now part of the Tall Grasses Prairie Preserve, managed by the National Park Service. The school saw its first class in 1884,ceased operations in 1930 and the school district disbanded in 1946. The school has been restored and now serves as a museum to show what it was like to attend school on the prairie. A far cry from the children of today attending school with iPads and laptops! So here's my salute to teachers today, doing their best in tough times.
