Buren is een prachtig vestingstadje in de Betuwe. Het kent een lange geschiedenis met het huis van Oranje. In 1551 trouwde Willem van Oranje in Buren met Anna van Buren. Hiermee verkreeg Willem van Oranje de titel graaf van Buren, een titel welke Koning Willem-Alexander ook nu nog draagt. In 1986 schaatste de toenmalige kroonprins de Elfstedentocht onder de schuilnaam Willem van Buren, een verwijzing naar de stad en titel. Het kasteel Buren is in de Franse tijd afgebroken, waarbij de stenen zijn hergebruikt in de stadsmuur en nieuwe panden, welke kasteeltuinen worden genoemd. De vesting is prachtig om te bewandelen, net als de monumentale stad vol monumenten. Natuurlijk met kanonnen! Een bezoek waard! ———— The town of Buren is a small fortified village in the Betuwe. It has a long history connected to the Dutch royal family. William of Orange, who was the leader of the Dutch revolt against the Spanish in the 16th century, married Anna of Buren at castle Buren in 1551, thus becoming count of Buren. This a title which still is carried by our present King Willem-Alexander. In 1805 the castle was demolished and its stones were used to strengthen the city walls. Also new houses were build, which were called the castle houses. In 1986 prince Willem-Alexander used the alias Willem van Buren when he ice-skated the famous Elfstedentocht in Friesland. Buren is a lovely village which is worth the visit.
