Small island communities have often been pioneers for sustainability and climate action. Are they a snapshot of a greener future, or a distraction from bigger problems elsewhere?
“Maria Kamma-Aliferi is mayor of the Greek island of Tilos, home to around 500 people. Tilos became energy self-sufficient last year thanks to wind and solar power combined with batteries that can store energy when there is a surplus. Kamma-Aliferi and her colleagues intend to go further, with plans to establish an expansive recycling programme across the island to achieve "zero waste" status.
"We want Tilos to be the beacon for other European islands, other Greek islands, to show them that if one small island like us can do all of that, then they can do it," says Kamma-Aliferi, via an interpreter.”
Your fate is not your karma. Your destiny is not your karma.
Karma is your action.
Your fate is only partly controlled by your actions. It is partly controlled by the actions of other human beings. It is partly controlled by non-human actors. Lastly by random chaotic chance.
Let’s say that the cat, startled by a wind gust, spills your coffee and as a result you’re running late for work. You argue with your partner over the cleanup and now rushing you run a red light and get a ticket.
The ticket was your destiny not your karma. Your karma was rushing through the light. The wind gust was random chance and the cat is a nonhuman actor. Your wife of course was the human actor. All combined to make your fate.
Results of karma are called karmaphala.

Cuatro clases de acción
«Existen cuatro clases de acción (kamma): oscura con resultado oscuro, brillante con resultado brillante, oscura y brillante con resultado oscuro y brillante, ni oscura ni brillante con resultado ni oscuro ni brillante que conduce a la destrucción de la acción» MN57
Todo acto que sea motivado con intención tendrá una manifestación a futuro, pero no siempre es claro saber si aquello que haremos tendrá un resultado positivo o uno negativo. O bien, como lo llama aquí el Buda, oscuro o brillante.
Pensemos en estos casos: ¿Es bueno matar para salvar una vida? ¿Robar para donar a los pobres?
Muchas veces pensamos que hay manera de justificar hacer un daño, aun un daño grande, con tal de hacer un bien. Esto es como pensar que si salto a un lago congelado para salvar a alguien yo estoy libre del riesgo de morir o incluso mojarme porque tengo una buena intención.
El kamma no es un juez que toma nota y evalúa así las intenciones, todo aquello que hagamos está sujeto tener resultados si tiene una intención que lo sustenta. Si yo mato para salvar una vida estoy cometiendo dos actos, por un lado matar y por otro salvar una vida, igual con un robo para luego hacer un bien a muchos.
La mayoría de nuestros actos son del tercer tipo, hay algunas cosas positivas y otras negativas. Cuando compramos una casa en el «mejor» lugar de la ciudad, estamos procurando nuestro bienestar, pero si sabemos que otras personas también están interesadas e intencionalmente buscamos ser nosotros quienes obtenemos la casa, estamos entonces pensando que estas personas no vivan ahí, no queremos que vivan en un mal lugar, pero no en el «mejor» lugar, ese es mío.
El otro equipo tiene que perder la Copa para que el mio la gane. Mejor que ellos lloren y sufran la derrota antes que yo sienta eso que es tan feo. Eso de hecho es lo que me alejó de los deportes, no que nunca haya sido bueno para eso, pero definitivamente no me agradó la idea de que alguien tenga que perder para yo ser feliz con mi equipo.
Los únicos actos que caen en la cuarta categoría, los que no generan resultados de este tipo, son los que están dirigidos al Noble Óctuple Sendero ya que no tienen el deseo de crear u obtener cosas nuevas, más bien están dirigidos a la destrucción de las condiciones que crean sufrimiento.
Sin necesidad de conocer cada detalle de los actos, lo importante es dirigir la mente hacia este último tipo, hacia el camino que nos enseñó el Buda para el cese definitivo del sufrimiento personal y el de todos los seres.
