Your theory about the lions building themselves and having spirits reminded me of how Atlas seemed to come "alive" after the castle ship diamond was installed. Sam Holt mentions that the ship "gained abilities [he] never even imagined." And of course, it turned into a freakin' mech later, which was probably not in Sam's plans. π Do you think this means Atlas has a spirit of its own as well?
The Atlas confounds me to no end because nothingΒ about the castle was sentient, outside of the fact that it once had Alforβs AI attached to it. Having all of the castleβs power compressed into a tiny diamond, and Shiroβs very unique connection to that spiritual side of Voltron seems to have given Atlas itself the ability to communicate with Shiro specifically, kind of like Allura had special attachments to the castle and the lions.Β
If I want to say the lions have their own spirit, then I guess that Atlas would too. Where it came from is a mystery.
Though Alfor had no idea that the lions could form Voltron, just like Sam had no idea that Atlas could turn into a mech. Sounds like the same stuff to me.
