(or, specifics that English fails to convey, and what this implies for the dynamics between the members of the coven)

We’ve all heard the Hexenbesen spell. Some of you may even know, or have found out, what it means. But today I’d like to point out a detail that isn’t quite captured in English (which I assume, from its translation, is where most of you learnt the meaning of the spell), but is clear to those who have studied Latin or speak a Romance language that retains that word (such as Spanish, for example).

‘Pro te, dilecta, aperio viam’. For you, beloved, I open the way.

That is correct, but incomplete. And the problem lies in the translation of 'dilecta', as translating it as ‘beloved’ does not capture its full meaning.

‘Beloved’ is understood as ‘much loved’. A strong feeling, but a general one. Most people will usually have several people to whom they apply such a label. ‘Dilecto/a’ is a kind of love that implies not only sincerity and depth in that love, but above all, favouritism. Only one person can be described as 'dilecto/a'.

To give an example we can all easily understand: normally a mother would think of all her children as ‘beloved’, without exception. But she would think twice, or even refuse, to use the word ‘dilecto’ to refer to any of them, because of what it implies for all her other children.

So, if you are my ‘dilecto/a’, you will be my favourite, my number one, amongst all my loved ones (some of them i would even call 'beloved')… whether in general, or within a closed group (such as a coven).
