Ship: Madara x Kakashi, Izuna x Shizune (Honorable mentions)
AU: Modern
For @narutorarepairjuneâ and @nart-rarepair-hellscapeâ
When you think of a romantic date, you typically think of a dinner at a fancy restaurant. Or going to the movies together, playing games at a local carnival things like that. But you know what Madara Uchiha does for his partner? Hiking. Thatâs right, hiking.Â
Madara and Kakashi had been dating for a good two years now, but not even Kakashi could figure out what that Uchiha was going to do next. He always gets bullied by one of his close friends Obito, who happens to be related to Madara. So of course their relationship was always interesting.Â
This was a hike through the seven waterfall hike in Kawazu. They were joined Izuna and his girlfriend Shizune. The group had wanted to do some sight seeing before lunch. The Uchiha brothers often joked with how their relationships were similar in their own way while Kakashi and Shizune reminisced about their youth.
When they finished they had lunch by a river with Bentos Shizune was gracious enough to make for everyone. The nice thing about this little trip was that there were no nosy passerbys to judge or make comments. A fitting activity for the rather hermit-like Uchiha that was Madara, but Kakashi wouldnât have it any other way.

When Kakashiâs stubborn stupidity had caused Madaraâs death his heart had died too. He swore heâd never let anyone get close enough to hurt him again, he couldnât handle losing anyone else. Rin and Minato-sensei had accepted the familiar cold attitude with pitying looks and a promise to listen whenever he was ready to talk. Kakashi found that odd, heâd never talked to them about anything before, so why would he start now?
It had taken Rin nearly getting kidnapped by Mist shinobi for Kakashi to realize heâd let her get close to him. That her death would be nearly as bad as losing Madara again. Minato-sensei has commented on how brutal his kills were, but the tone had told Kakashi the older man would have done the same thing if Kakashi hadnât beaten him to it. Apparently Minato-sensei couldnât stand the thought of losing another team member anymore than he could.
Kakashiâs promotion to ANBU had been met with resistance, but heâd managed to convince his sensei he could handle it. He excelled in the ANBU, rumor had it he might make captain soon. Normally Kakashi wouldnât believe such rumors, but his next wave of missions had been his hardest yet. Heâd done them without compliant, despite how utterly insane some of them were, and even enjoyed the solo aspect of them. That being said, Kakashi was secretly glad to be added to a team for the next mission, taking the position of second in command. He vowed this mission would be his smoothest one yet.
Staring at body floating in the large tube-like chamber, Kakashi finds himself at a loss. This was supposed to be an easy mission; all his team had to do was infiltrate one of Orochimaruâs supposed labs and find any useful information they could. That was it, simple easy mission; aside from the high chance of deadly traps and running into the sannin himself. Taking on Orochimaru single-handedly would be preferable to this; at least it would be a quick end. Not this slow agony that made his heart skip several painful beats.
Madara
Madara Uchiha
The selfless idiot that had pushed him out of harms awayâŚ
âŚthat had given him his SharinganâŚ
âŚthat should be DEADâŚ
âŚnot floating in a glass tube filled with some strange liquid.
Kakashi wants to write it off as just his heart getting the better of his brain and making him see someone else as Madara, even if no one else had such a wild mane of hair. He wants to lock this moment away and never think of it again, and heâs going to, but then-
Then the pale figure opens his eyes and an achingly familiar Sharingan locks onto his own gifted one.
The world disappears around Kakashi as an inferno of chakra overwhelms him.
Instinctive awareness comes back to Kakashi first and he realizes heâs in a hospital before heâs fully conscious. Once heâs capable of higher thinking, the Hatake is torn between praying everything he remembered from the mission was just a nightmare and hoping it really happened.
âWelcome back.â That calm, compassionate voice could only be Minato-sensei.
âDid it really happen?â Kakashi questions softly, opening his eye to look at the blonde, aware his expression is a thousand times more open than he wants it to be.
âIâŚâ Minato starts before he cuts himself with a sigh and breaks eye contact. It takes him a moment, but when Minato looks back at Kakashi, heâs no longer a sensei, but the Hokage. âWhat do you remember?â
âMadara, alive.â
âYes, that really happened.â Minato pauses, knowing his former student needs a few moments to process that statement.
âHow?â Kakashi finally asks, because thatâs what he desperately needs to know; he doesnât care about anything else, just how his best friend came back from the dead.
âThat is unclear,â Minato says, unable to suppress his laugh at the unimpressed glare Kakashi shoots at him. âFrom our primary look at Orochimaruâs notes it would seem that he found Madara on the brink of death and decided to experiment on him. The full extent of what happened to him is unknown, those notes werenât recovered, but it appears Orochimaru was still looking into Hashiramaâs DNA.â
âHashiramaâs DNAâŚ?â Kakashi mutters in confusion before his eye widens, âthe Mokuton.â
âPrecisely,â Minato sighs, rubbing a hand over his eyes and Kakashi notices for the first time just how tired his sensei looks. âMadara displayed the ability when he broke out of his container to get to you.â
âTo get to me?â
âThe other ANBU reported that he broke out, injured you in the process, and then refused to let anyone near you. He had to be sedated so you could both be brought back here.â
âHeâs here?â
âOf course,â Minato grins brightly, âwe would never abandon a fellow Leaf shinobi! Heâs still sedated though, until we can make sure heâs stable and still on our side.â
âMadara would never betray us!â Kakashi snaps before he can stop himself, much to his embarrassment.
âKakashiâŚâ Minato catches the younger shinobiâs eyes, a pained look in his deep blue eyes. âThe Madara you lost might not be the Madara you found.â
âImpossible.â
âJust keep it in mind,â Minato advises as he stands up, âonce you are discharged come see me with your mission report and we can discuss this more then.â
In the end Kakashi is given a weekâs leave from the ANBU to recover, which is hardly necessary for the minor concussion heâd had, even Rin had agreed with him, but Minato-sensei had held firm. He had claimed it was for the emotional trauma of finding Madara like that, but Kakashi called bullshit; his sensei just wanted him to take it easy for longer.
Life passes by in a blur of missions, and the occasional, reluctant social outing Rin had dragged him along for, until 3 months later Kakashi finds himself being assigned a long-term mission: helping Madara get reacquainted with the village. At first Kakashi is overjoyed, not that he shows it, until he realizes that means Madara is temporarily staying with him and that makes his heart beat painfully. He wants to protest, but he knows Madara doesnât have anyone to stay with and he couldnât turn his friend away. Kakashi was sure he could handle it.
Not even a week later, Kakashi knows he was wrong, very, very wrong. If his heart kept skipping beats every time he saw Madara stumbling sleepily into the kitchen or when the Uchiha smiled at him he was going to have a damn heart attack. Then there was also his ever increasing nighttime problems; why did Madara have to invade his dreams and why did he have to be naked in those dreams!? Kakashi was going to have to try harder to ignore the Uchiha, maybe then the stupid dreams would stop.
âIâm moving back in with my clan,â Madara declares one night, nearly 2 weeks after heâs moved into the lonely Hatake household.
âWhat?â Kakashi mutters, barely hearing his own words over the sound of something in his heart shattering.
âI said Iâm going back to my clan.â
âWhy?â
âYou clearly hate my presence,â Madara grumbles with huff, crossing his arms over his chest and pouting in a manner that shouldnât be so cute. âYouâve barely spoken to me at all this week and you yell at me almost every morning.â
âIâŚâ Kakashi trails off, not sure how to make Madara stay. âI donât...thatâs notâŚâ
âSpit it out!â Madara snaps, glaring at Kakashi with his one visible black eye. Whatever Orochimaru had done to Madara had grown his eye back and turned the remaining one purple; Kakashi thought the purple suited Madara just fine, but the Uchiha always covered the eye with his hair.
âI donât hate you,â Kakashi finally manages to spit out, feeling a blush spread across his cheeks, âyou can stay.â
âEven if you donât hate me,â Madara pauses briefly, doubt coloring his words, âyou clearly arenât happy that Iâm here.â
âYou have no idea how happy I am that youâre not dead,â Kakashi says honestly, knowing he needs to choose his next words carefully so he doesnât lose the Uchiha, âIâm just not used toâŚâ
âUsed to what?â
âHavingacrush!â Kakashi blurts the words in a rush before he can stop himself, startling his older teammate. It takes Madara a minute to decode what heâd just said, but when he does, he canât help but chuckle.
âKakashi,â Madara coos, moving to sit next to his teammate and throwing an arm over the otherâs shoulders, âthat is both the saddest and most adorable thing Iâve ever heard.â
âFuck you.â
âIf you think you can.â Both shinobi flush darkly at Madaraâs unexpected reply as the Uchiha quickly scrambles away. It takes Kakashi several minutes to get over the shock, but when he does he finds Madara across the room, doing his best impression of a startled cat.
âW-what?â
âI said uhhâŚâ Madara mutters, ducking under his hair to avoid making eye contact, âhow about dinner?â
âAre you asking me out?â Kakashi asks, unsure if heâs reading the situation right, Rin had told him he wasnât the best when it came to understanding romantic situations.
âWould you be upset if I was?â
âNo.â Kakashi says without any hesitation, knowing he said the right thing when Madara meets his eyes with a brilliant grin.
âThen yes, I am.â
âDinner sounds nice,â Kakashi agrees with a smaller, more sedate but no less happy grin.

With the click of the door, Kakashi leaped up, which sent his desk chair skidding backwards and into the wall. He squinted blurry eyes to see Shizuneâs form slip in, Ton-ton in one arm and a pile of manila folders in the other.
âI was only resting my eyes,â he blurted.
âHokage-sama,â Shizune said, her back straight.
âKakashi.â He corrected.
âKakashi-sama, Iâve brought the files you requested.â
He sighed as he took the stack from her outstretched hand, before he realigned his seat and sat back down. âThank you. I wanted to look them over again before the meeting.â
He flipped the cover open on the top file and absently thumbed through the first few sheets.
âTsunade-sama was the same way,â Shizune said.
âHm?â
âNot sleeping. Worrying about things out of her control.â
âAm I that obvious?â he asked.
âThereâs drool on your mask,â Shizune said and then swiftly added, âsir.â
âOh,â he mumbled as he ran a gloved hand across his mouth to find there was indeed a wet spot. Â He didnât even remember dozing off.
He knew he hadnât been sleeping well. Worse than normal, which was erratic at best. Over the years heâd become accustomed to exhaustion. Staying up for days and only giving in when his body finally collapsed into a deep and dreamless sleep.
That much hadnât really changed. He only had a better excuse now that he was Hokage.
âAre the preparations complete?â
âYes, sir. The main conference room is prepped and our guests should be arriving within the hour.â
âGood,â Kakashi said as he leaned forward in his seat. âWe need this go as smooth as possible. What happens today could change everything.â
Skepticism flashed across Shizuneâs face, before she quickly schooled her expression again.
Kakashi didnât fault her for that. He too had reservations, but couldnât decide if it was the proposal in general that left him on edge, or simply the idea of change. He should be used to it by now, with the way everything had shifted after the war. New alliances brought new committees. Whole buildings had been erected to house departments for international exchange. Old departments, already staffed thin, were stretched even leaner, both from the opening of new positions and the vacancy left from those who didnât return from the war.
âIâve also assigned extra ANBU guards to attend to the entrances,â she added.
He lifted one of the sheets and examined it with narrowed eyes. âI donât recall requesting that,â he glanced at her for a moment, before he looked back to the paper. âIâm not even sure what this is. Do you know what this is?â
âI donât understand any of it,â she said, without glancing at the diagram. âAnd the ANBU is to ensure that Madara doesnât interrupt with his histrionics. We donât need him storming in here like he normally does.â Â
âIâm too old for this, Shizune.â He slumped in his chair and returned the sheet to the top of the stack. âYou donât need to worry about Madara. Iâve already taken care of it. He should be here shortly to receive his assignment.â
Another incredulous look, and Kakashi laughed, low and a little raspy from exhaustion. âDonât worry. Iâve assigned him babysitters to make sure he doesnât interfere today. Theyâve been instructed to physically restrain him if necessary.â
âIt still wouldnât be a bad idea to leave the extra guards.â
âYou give him too much credit.â
âAnd you need to set better boundaries,â Shizune chided and quickly added, âI apologize, sir. That was out of line.â
Kakashi opened his mouth to reply, but was interrupted by a knock on the door.
âCome in,â he called.
âSorry to bother you, Hokage-same,â Yurito said as he walked through the door. âI just need yourâŚâ
âMove out of my way,â Madara snapped as he bumped into Yurito and knocked a stack of papers out of his hands and onto the floor. Â âThe idiot requested my presence.â
âI'll go triple check everything,â Shizune said, not disguising the roll of her eyes as she turned and walked out. Madara didnât so much as glance at her as she glided past him.
âIâll come back later,â Yurito shut the door behind him.
Madara stopped directly in front of the desk and peered down at Kakashi with amused eyes. âWell, you look like shit.â
âThanks. Physical appearance has always been a priority of mine.â
âI hear your sarcasm and acknowledge that we are both under the assumption that your face is hideous under that mask.â
Kakashi stared at him blankly. He wasnât in the mood for this, but didnât want to spoil whatever good mood Madara seemed to be having.
âI have a new assignment for you.â
âIs that so?â Madara said as he leaned over and placed both hands on the Hokage desk. âAnother one of your pitiful attempts to humiliate me?â
Kakashi noted how worn his gloves looked, the leather cracked and smudged with dirt. He wondered if he ever took them off, even while sleeping. He should probably wipe the area down after Madara left. Just to be safe.
âSadly, no. This is more for your benefit than mine,â Kakashi turned and slid open the top left drawer. âYouâll go to this address. Iâve even written directions to help get you there.â
In the time it took Kakashi to open his desk drawer and retrieve the information, Madara snatched up the top paper from the folder he had accidentally left open.
âWhat is this?â He cooed, as he brought the page up to his eyes.
Kakashiâs face remained neutral as he calmly replied, âAh, that? Something Iâve been doodling.â
âRight,â Madara snorted. âIâve seen your drawings. If they can be called that. Tobirama was the same way. Ruining important documents with his idle scribbles.â Â
Idle scribbles? Kakashi felt his eyebrow twitch. He was aware that he didnât possess the artist skill of someone like Sai, but he couldnât be that bad. Could he? Heâd like to see Madara do any better.
That was it. Kakashi pushed away from the desk and stood up. âEnough games,â he said, all humor gone as he extended his arm. âGive it back. It isnât for youâ Â
âOh, is that so,â Madara teased. âMust be important.â
âImportant enough that you shouldnât be messing with it.â
He held the paper close to his face, as he turned it sideways. âNo, seriously, what is this? Torture machines? Witchcraft?â
In one rapid movement, Kakashi snatched the paper out of his hand and ripped the left-hand corner clean off. Madara stared back him, stunned, before his face curled into a snarl.
âScowl all you want to. It wasnât yours to play with,â Kakashi scolded. âAnd I think you might need glasses.â
Kakashi knew he had pushed him too far, when Madaraâs face reddened, and he suddenly lunged at him. He was easy to dodge. Without any chakra, Madara was clumsy and slow. Â Even so, Kakashi knew he shouldnât prolong this, and side stepped when he made another grab for the paper. Â He kicked his foot out from under him and Madara tipped forward. Kakashi caught him by one arm, promptly twisted it behind his back, and with his other hand, shoved Madaraâs face down into the desk.
âMadara! Calm down.â Â
âJust give it to me"
It was at that moment Shikamaru walked in. He made it two steps into the office, before he froze, stalk still like a deer. Too stunned by the sight of Madara bent over and writhing. The Hokage pressed against his backside.
âDid someone come in?â Madara grumbled. Most of the sound muffled by his curtain of hair.
It broke Shikamaru from his trance. He quickly covered his eyes and stammered, âIâm so sorry. Iâll come back later.â
âThis will only take a minute,â Kakashi chirped and gave a closed eyed smile.
Shikamaru made sure to throw the lock before he shut the door behind him.
He turned back to Madara, who had taken to calling him some very creative nicknames. No one had ever referred to him as a âpiece of monkey shitâ before. Kakashi tightened the grip on his hair, the other hand still locked firm around his wrist. He suddenly became acutely aware of their closeness and noted that Madara felt smaller at this angle. Much less imposing. He was still squirming and the sound of him panting sent a chill through Kakashi.
He released him and pushed back far enough to give them adequate space. It took a moment for Madara to compose himself and twist back around. Kakashi expected that he might come for him again, but instead Madara turned to him with an expression that was both confused and humiliated.
Without a word, Madara retrieved the address, which had fallen to the floor, and stomped out of his office.
**********
Since losing his abilities, Madara had grown accustomed to walking everywhere. At first it was exhausting; incarceration had left him lethargic. Muscles that were once well tuned ached and he grew weary after even short distances. But that was months ago. Now, he spent most of his days puttering around the village and he found the rhythm of it soothing.
But the people still annoyed him. All of them crowded in the streets, with their crying children and idle chatter. Â He took mostly to back alleys and side streets in order to avoid the clusters.
For that reason, he didnât even look at the directions Kakashi had scrawled. He knew the street, so finding the address was no issue. He wasnât even surprised when he found himself outside one of those obnoxiously large clothing stores, but that didnât mean the masked menace wasnât going to get an earful once he was done.
âThere he is. Madara!â Sakura called waving one arm to get his attention. Â
Madara eyes moved between Sakura and the petite blonde that glared at him.
âSakura,â Madara groaned as he crumbled the address up and tossed it to the ground. âAre you here to assist me on this little adventure?â
âKakashi-sensei asked us to help you pick out some new clothes.â
âOf course he did. As if I were a child and not a grown man completely capable of dressing himself.â
Madara knew the real reason for their presence was to keep him out of trouble. He guessed the old dog was finally catching on that Sasuke did little more than watch his shenanigans unfold. Â âBut why is she here? I donât need two of you to put pants on.â
âGross. Like anyone would want to touch your pants,â Ino sneered and then whispered, âpervert.â
âTrust me, Blondie, youâre not my type,â Madara uncrossed his arms and made his way to the entrance door. âSakura, grab your Yorkie, so we can get this over with.â
âDid he just call me a dog?â
Sakura grabbed Ino by the arm, âJust ignore him. Heâs only trying to goad you.â
A soft âtingâ rang as they crossed through the door.
âHi and welcome toâŚâ a young girl in a blue vest chimed and faltered, her voice trailed off the moment her gaze fell on Madara.
He swallowed. Did every insect in this village recognize him on sight? Back in his day, a civilian like this would quiver in fear at the sight of him, but the way she was looking at him now wasnât with fear.
No, this was disgust.
It was much the same when the village was founded. No matter what the alliance meant, hostility unmasked itself not just in sideways glances, but in petty ways. Hashirama tried to mitigate some of the trouble, but outside pressure left him placating to the opposition more often than not.
Madara didnât really blame him. At least, not as much anymore. Â He was the one that abandoned their dream, after all.
He ignored the daggers the sales woman was shooting him and stomped in the direction of the big sign that said âMenâs.â
Sakura sidled up next to him. âYou missed your last appointment.â
âI was busy.â
âIâm sure,â she said, her steps keeping pace as his stride quickened. âYour therapy appointment too.â
âI was busy that day as well.â
âActive life,â Sakura nodded. They had reached the menâs section and Madara was already looking around for something to distract himself with. âAre you at least taking your meds?â
Ino, who hadnât rushed to keep up, finally arrived behind them. Â
Madara eyed her warily. âWhy bother? They donât do anything.â
He made his way to the closest rack and flipped through it quickly, without any real focus. Obviously uncomfortable with the conversation.
âWe talked about this,â Sakura leaned in and whispered. âYouâre not going to see the effects right away, but if you give it a little time.â
âEnough,â Madara snapped. âJust give me another appointment and Iâll be sure to be there. I donât want to yammer on about it today.â
âIf he wants to suffer, just let him,â Ino said.
Madara ignored her and pulled a shirt from the rack, realized once it was out that it was two sizes too small, and he tossed it to the floor. Â
Sakura snatched the shirt off the floor and hung it back up. âWhat are you doing? You canât just throw things on the floor.â
âWhy have you brought me here?â he groaned, âThese garments arenât suitable for peasants. You might as well fit me with a potato sack.â
Sakura let out an exasperated sigh and pulled a few items off the rack. âSee, these arenât too bad. Why donât you go try them on?â
âIâm not wearing that.â
âHow about this?â Ino said as she held up a vibrant orange and black one piece. âI think this would look stunning on you.â
âBe serious,â Sakura scolded.
âFine,â Ino sighed. âBut weâre not dressing him in blue.â
âAgreed, no blue,â Sakura said. âHow about this?â
âHm, I dunno,â Ino placed a hand on her chin. âHis shoulders are too broad for that and Iâm thinking he needs a button down. I canât see any shirt hole being large enough to fit that hair of his. Oh, this one looks nice.â
âI like that, but maybe go up a size. Heâs put on a little weight since he got here.â
âYou both know that Iâm standing right here?â he snarled. âI donât need you picking out clothes for me.â
Ignoring him, Sakura heaved a large pile of garments into his arms. âHere, this should be good for now. Letâs go try them on.â Before he could protest, she was shoving him towards the fitting rooms. Â
Madara slammed the door behind him and tossed the clothing on the side bench.
With a few snaps, he undid his shoulder pads and draped them gingerly on the nearest hook. He did the same with his armor. The rest of his clothing was neatly folded and set in a corner. Once undressed, Madara reached down and pinched a bit of the flesh on his lower abdomen and frowned.
Maybe he had gained a little weight.
He reached out and took the first shirt from the pile, light-weight and heather gray. The fabric felt smooth between his fingers. He combined it with a pair of black slacks.
He wondered if the shirt was too snug and sucked in his gut as he gazed at himself in the full-length mirror. The v-neck cut felt strangelyâŚrevealing. He stripped them both off and threw them into a corner that he deemed worthy of at least consideration.
The next was a pale blue short-sleeved with the words âWarning: This T-Shirt May Contain an Idiotâ across the front. Blondieâs work, he was sure. He tossed it in the rejection pile.
âMadara,â Sakura called through the door. âYou should come out and model them for us.â
âNot a chance.â
âJust let him finish. The sooner he gets done, the sooner we can leave,â Ino said.
Even at a whisper, Madara could hear her through the thin door.
âIf you have somewhere you need to be, you can go. I can handle this.â Even lower, Sakura added, âI can tell you donât want to be here.â
Ino let out an audible exhale. âOf course I donât want to be here. Looking at him makes me sick.â
There was a crack in her voice towards the end and Madara leaned in closer to the door. A long period of silence followed and he wondered if they had moved farther away.
âIno,â Sakura finally said, voice soft. âIs this about your dad?â
âYeah, fine, whatever,â her words shook. âIâll let you handle this. I have somewhere I need to be anyway. See you later, Forehead.â
âWait! Ino!â Sakura called after her, but Madara could hear her fading footsteps.
Madara sucked in a deep breath. He now understood the girlâs hostility. Her father must have died during the war.
He had never been close to his own father. Tajima had been an unaffectionate bastard and the only thing that bound them was blood and war. Madara may have killed him with his own hands if consumption hadnât taken him first.
He didnât even know who her father had been. One of many faceless shinobi. He had no way of knowing how many people heâd killed over the years. Hundreds? Thousands? One doesnât keep tallies in battle. You only rest your head at night, thankful to live another day.
But why did he suddenly feel so guilty?
âHowâs it going in there?â Sakura called and Madara jumped.
âFine.â
He turned back to the pile of clothing to continue where he left off. One pile for acceptable, another for rubbish.
Who cares if some teenaged girl hated him?
After he tried everything on, Madara put his old garments back on and handed off the rejects to Sakura. âThese ones will do, I suppose.â Â
âGood, weâll call this a win,â Sakura gave him a strained smile.
Neither one of them mentioned Inoâs absence as Sakura paid for the items and they made their way to the door.
âCome Monday, I want to see you in my office,â she reminded him and patted him softly on the shoulder. âPromise?â
âFine, fine,â he grumbled. âI promise.â
**********
Once back at his house, Madara hung up each new item in his closet, leaving out the first outfit he had tried on. It seemed fitting to show the Hokage that he had completed his foolish task without fail. He thought he might walk over there and gloat before it got too late in the evening.
As he stood in front of his bathroom mirror, Madara pulled at the snug gray shirt and wondered if, maybe, he should have gone with a larger size. Having decided that it looked fine and he hadnât gained that much weight, he went to flip off the bathroom light and paused at his reflection.
He was suddenly struck by how a simple change in attire altered his appearance. Smaller, maybe. Less threatening, true. But it was the normality of it he found unsettling. He could be anybody. Not someone legendary, but an average guy just going about his business.
He looked like a civilian and, Madara thought, he supposed that was what he was now. No longer a shinobi. Heâd lost the right to call himself that.
By the time he left the house, the sun was already low enough to cast everything in a golden hue. It was nearly dark by the time he reached the Administration Building. He was surprised to find the windows of the Hokage office unlit and wondered if Kakashi had decided to take an early night.
âI agree. It's a risk,â Madara recognized Kakashi's voice and froze where he was. âBut we won't move into it blindly. I want more information before I make a solid decision.â
More muffled words that Madara couldn't make out. He crouched to the ground and kept low enough that he was camouflaged by a cropping of boxwoods.
âIt's foolishness,â a woman shouted. Madara recognized her as one of the elders that had argued in favor of his execution. He couldnât recall her name, nor the older man standing next to her.
âAs it is, the village cannot sustain itself,â Kakashi said firmly. âMissions have dwindled and even if the hadnât, we donât have the manpower. We have to adapt.â
âYou'll do what you want either way,â she snapped. Â âBut if things go wrong, youâre the one that will answer for it.â With that, the woman turned and dramatically walked away. Her companion following close behind her.
Once they were out of sight, Madara watched as Kakashi's shoulders sagged. He stood for a moment like that, before he turned and walked in the direction of the Hokage mansion.
Madara waited until he was gone to get up from his hiding place. He looked down to find his new clothes covered in dirt. Guess he would have to learn to work the washing machine after all.

âEveryone thinks weâre a couple,â Madara whined boomed powerfully as soon as he sulked stormed purposefully into the Senju private training grounds, arms crossed and his typical pout scowl in place. In the tree above him, Kakashiâreclined on a branch, nose buried in the ever present Icha Icha Paradiseâhummed contemplatively.
âWell, we did sleep together,â was Kakashiâs lackadaisical reply, although he did offer Madara a casual shrug as well. Madara wondered how Kakashi could shrug while his upper body was squashed awkwardly between the treeâs trunk and one of its branches, then wondered why the irritating man chose to sit in such a seemingly uncomfortable position to start with. âProbably just to vex me,â Madara thought, experiencing a pleasant flutter in his belly at the idea of Kakashi thinking about him before getting back on track.
âYesâliterally. As in, just sleeping!â Madara spat, as if the other man hadnât been there too, just as drunk. Madara was totally not disappointed that it was all that happened. Totally.
There was a brief flip of a page and an extra beat of silence before Kakashi deigned to reply. Madara knew Kakashi only did this to bother him. Madara knew a lot about Kakashi though a good deal of it was misconstrued or just totally wrong.
âIâm wondering if your horror should insult me.â Kakashi finally settled on, his tone deceptively casual and aloof.
Talking before his mouth could catch up with his brain, Madara stuttered, âIâwhatânoââ
ââI enjoyed sleeping with you.â
âAaaand there it is,â Madara thought, truly scowling now, hair bristling like a cat with its hackles raised as he caught onto Kakashiâs newest cruelest joke. Of course Kakashi found humour in this situation. Of course Kakashi didnât careâwould never careâwould never have those same feelings.
âYou find this far too funny,â was Madaraâs only reply, unable to think up anything better while the pleasant fluttering from before transformed into an uncomfortable twisting in his gut.
Another pause. Another page flipped. A deep breath. Then Kakashi blew everything straight to hell.
Madara reacting to Kakashi and Gai's (Ridiculous) Rivalry
So in response to @raendownâs request for ^ I ended up writing some head canons, which sorta turned into a fic outline. It got kinda long so I figured it needed ts own post.  This would be taking place in an AU where Madara lives after being redeemed during then Fourth Shinobi War. Imagine Madara watching something like Kakashi and Gaiâs race, during the Pein arcâŚ
Honestly, Iâm pretty sure Madara would be super jealous. Kakashi is cool and aloof and never gives his attention freely. Madara has had to fight to gain even a glance. I guess it depends on Madaraâs feelings for Kakashi when he first sees Kakashi and Gai doing their rival stuff full on.
If Madara isnât interested yet (and I donât just mean romantically but if Kakashi hasnât piqued Maradaâs curiosity) then Madara will probably just be weirded out, and very derisive. Like, sneer of disgust, full on looking down his nose at them.
If Madara is even a bit curious about Kakashi, heâs going to be pissedâlike, angry-jealous. âWhy does that buffoon so easily garner his attention? And for such idiotic things?â
If Madara already has romantic feelings, heâs going to be super jealousâsalty, even. He can see how close Gai and Kakashi areâMadara completely looks over the absurdity of their actions and sees the closeness of their bond.
The first time they get up to something, Madara tries to brush it off as just something silly. Still, part of him is burning because âwhy does that green idiot get so much of Kakashiâs attention?â
The second time, Madara tries to convince himself that Kakashi is just indulging the other man, so Gai will leave him alone.
But the more he sees it, the less Madara can lie to himself; there is genuine joy in Kakashiâs eyes, as much as Kakashi tries to play like itâs a bother. Gai and Kakashi know each other so well, are surprisingly in syncâMadara hates that someone else has that sort of bond with Kakashi, while also being reluctantly grateful that Kakashi has someone in his life to depend on. But Madara canât help but want Kakashi to focus on only him. Madara has played second fiddle to Tobirama in the past, and he canât stand the thought that he might get relegated to âback-up companion.â Madara is super insecure about his bonds, tbh.
Madara is going to be soooo salty about thingsâŚat first. Then heâs going to try and one-up Gai. Rival challenges seem to get Kakashiâs attention? Well, Madara is going to propose a challenge (not that it will be posed as a challenge or in the frame of a rivalry). (Have I mentioned before that Madara cannot flirt? Because he canât. Heâs so horrible at itâmore on that in another post). Of course it wonât be with the same panache or to the degree of silliness that Gaiâs challenges are. But Kakashi is observant, and heâll pick it up for what it is. Kakashi may indulge Madara, but heâll definitely tease him about it. Subtle comments that could be taken innocuously, but are a little too spot on. Madara gets so embarrassed (not that heâll admit it) that he never tries it again.
Depending on Kakashiâs own feelings, things go three ways from here:
If Kakashi isnât interested in Madara, heâs just going to tease Madara about it occasionallyâwhen the opening arises. He wonât be looking for them, but when they pop up Kakashi will just have totally innocent comments that are far too casual to be anything other than hidden blades.
If Kakashi has feelings but he and Madara are not in a relationship, then heâs still going to tease Madara, but it will be more flirty: âthere are better ways to get my attention, Dara-chan~ ;3â
if Kakashi and Madara are in a relationship, then Kakashi will tease Madara stillâthere is no relationship with Kakashi that doesnât involve teasingâbut heâll also throw in âjealouslyâ comments. Like âMaaâŚgreen is Gaiâs colour, are you trying to steal that from him too?â But heâll also be reassuring. Kakashi understands inferiority complexesâespecially when it comes to relationships. So heâll talk the piss outta Madara, but heâll for sure make it up to him with slow kisses and lingering touches and so much more. Kakashi will also subtly remind Madara that while Gai is his best friend, theyâve never been and wonât ever be more than that.
With time, Madara gets used to it. Heâll still feel jealousy at Kakashiâs close bond to Gai, and he might let that cause an argument or two or ten or twenty. They generally go something like this:
Kakashi will stare deadpan and let Madara rant himself silly. When Madara pauses to ask if Kakashi has anything to say for himself, Kakashi will turn a page of Icha Icha (when did he pull that out? Madara will wonder) and give a classic âMaaâŚwere you talking to me?â Which of course makes Madara even more mad.
Madara will learn that there is no such thing as an argument with Kakashi, that Kakashi himself didnât start. You can rage at him as much as you like, but Kakashi wonât engage unless he thinks itâs serious topicâbeing jealous of Gaiâs Rival Challenges most definitely is Not.
Maybe if Madara stormed out and didnât come home one night, Kakashi would get worried, but heâd also be kind of like âwell if he can leave so easily then he doesnât deserve to be chased after.â
But then the second night comes around and Kakashi canât sleepââthis is such a dumb argument why isnât he back yet? Did something happen to him?â
By the third night, Kakashi is out looking for Madara. When Kakashi find him, that will lead to a fight where Kakashi calls Madara immature and Madara basically scoffs, saying âIâm immature? Youâre the one indulging that boneheaded animal with your juvenile rivalry!â And now Kakashi is mad(der) because he might care for Madara but no one gets to deride Gai even if Gai is a little off his rocker.
So now Kakashi disappears, but not without some scathing comments. And Madara is not done with the argument, so he tries to chase Kakashi down. Only Kakashi has vanished and isnât at his (or theirâif theyâre livIng together) home, and âwhere in the blazes did Kakashi go? Heâs Hokage he canât leave the village!â but Kakashi is nowhere to be found.
Eventually Madara will find him, and Kakashi will pull his disappearing act againâor heâll try to. Madara will be ready this time, and Kakashi will end up pinned, and maybe Madara takes the opportunity to kiss Kakashi because itâs been a week now since they touched and Madara canât really help himself when heâs that close to Kakashi.
[insert angry sex]
They talk about Madaraâs jealously, sort of, but Madara doesnât acknowledge it as jealously (to Kakashi, inside Madara knows what it is) and Kakashi explains that Gai is part of the package deal. Gai has stuck by Kakashi and supported him since they were children. Heâs Kakashiâs oldest friend. Madara will just have to trust that friendship is the only thing between them, and the only thing that will be between them. Madara already knew he was being ridiculous, and has calmed down by now.
[cue make up sex]
Things are cool for a while, until the next crazy challenge and the cycle starts over again
Madara will eventually get over it. Itâll just take time and lots of reassurances. As the years of their relationship pass by, Madara loses his insecurity towards Kakashi leaving him/favouring others over him, which pretty much eliminates the jealousyâŚor most of it, anyways.
Madara will even start to tease Kakashi about the ridiculousness of the challenges themselves, which will actually fluster Kakashi a bit. Madara finds he takes great enjoyment in finally ruffling his loveâs feathers, instead of the other way around (itâs so soooo much sweeter, having finally turned the tables).
Madara will start suggesting increasingly embarrassing challenges to Gai, which Gai will accept enthusiastically and with Youthful Tears of Joy because âthe Love of my Eternal Rival has Finally Accepted the Blossom of Youthful Friendship!â Gai and Madara are in the Springtime of their Friendship, after Gai waited out the Long Chilly Winter of Madaraâs Discontent. Kakashi will dread these challenges more than ever, but itâs a fair price to pay for Madaraâs lack of jealously.
So yeah, apparently I have Feelings about this. Idk if Iâll write it into a long one-shot, or if itâs going to stay in this weird outline. But here are my thoughts.
