Takeru is sitting on the couch, playing on his phone. Heâs not really paying attention to what the adults are talking aboutâheâd already caught up with his uncle earlier and heâs certain theyâre just discussing boring adult things now.
He hears bits and pieces of the conversation, catching a few random words here and there. Thereâs some talk about the recent weather in Argentina, and then something about a curry commercial, the Olympics, and for some reasonâUncle Tooruâs middle school?
One thing sticks out in particular, however. Takeruâs uncle keeps mentioning a âTobio-chanâ. His name has been brought up seven times in this current topic alone. Takeru racks his brain to try and place the name.
Tobio-chan⊠Why does it sound so familiar?
And thenâ
Tobio is no match for Oikawa-san!
No. Way.
The revelation is so mind-boggling that Takeru cannot help cutting into the adultsâ conversation.
âTooru, youâre still going on about this guy? What, are you dating or something?â
Takeru remembers âTobio-chanâ clearly now. Heâd taken a photo of the boy and his uncle. Afterwards, Tooru kept looking at it and laughing maniacally to himself. And then he kept looking at it, with somewhat of a wistful expression.
âIâ!â Uncle Tooru gawks at him.
Takeruâs motherâs expression turns extremely sly. âWhatâs this, Tooru? Do you have a little crush on our national setter?â
Wait, what?
âMum, whatâre you talking about?â Takeru puts his phone down.
âWhy, Tooruâs âTobio-chanâ is none other than the Japanese menâs national volleyball teamâs setter, Kageyama Tobio!â
âThe K-Kageyama-senshu?!â
Takeru doesnât even know how to begin to process this. Kageyama Tobio is so cool. He went to the Olympics at nineteen.
Everyone loves Kageyama. His uncle isnât special.
âOh my god.â Is his uncle hanging onto the past, back when he was Kageyamaâs senpai, because he canât move on or something? He thinks he read a storyline like that in a manga. âUncle Tooru. You are so lame.â
His uncle actually looks hurt. Before he can defend himself, Takeruâs grandma innocently pipes up.
âOh? Is Tooru seeing someone?â
Now Uncle Tooruâs face turns beet red. He holds his hands out in front of him and pleads with them all.
âPlease. Can we justâ calm down for a sec?â
Uncle Tooru turns to Takeru first.
âNot cool, Takeru. Donât bully your elders.â
Then he looks at Takeruâs mum. âYouâre not funny, shut up.â
And before he can be chastised for his language, âDear mother. Of course you would be the first to know if I started seeing anyone.â Uncle Tooru says his next words very deliberately and slowly. âSince you have not heard anything, it clearly means that I am in fact not seeing anyone. Least of all Tobioâ Kageyama-senshu.â
A moment passes. And then Takeruâs mum singsongs, âBut I bet you wish you were~â
Uncle Tooru glares at Takeruâs mum, but then he sighs. With his head on the table, he says, âYeah. Maybe. Fuck. Maybe Iâve just wanted Tobio all along.â
For some reason, Takeruâs mum sends him a glare after Tooru says this, as if to tell him, this is your fault.
Takeru throws his hands up. He didnât mean to send his uncle into a crisis! He didnât think old people even got crushes anymore! God, Tooru looks worse than when Takeruâs best friendâs crush started dating someone else.
âAlright, Iâm out.â Takeruâs mum stands up and Takeru goes to follow. She stops him in his tracks. âOh no you donât. Why donât you stay here with your uncle? Kageyama is your favourite player, right? Maybe you can bond over your shared love for him.â
Takeru shudders. He does not think the admiration he has for his favourite volleyball player is the same as the yucky gooey feelings his uncle has for his once-kouhai at all.
âWhat a lovely idea!â Takeruâs grandma says.
Then she takes her daughterâs arm and the two of them leave.
Takeru is left in the room alone with his uncle, who still looks defeated. But hey, surely it canât be that bad, right? Takeruâs seen how Kageyama interacts with other people outside of matches. Heâs sure heâs nice, or something. If Uncle Tooru were just to talk to himâŠ
âDo you have his number?â Takeru asks suddenly. Not because he wants to play wingman for his uncleâthatâs beyond grossâbut because heâs realised that he could actually meet Kageyama some day if he and Tooru start dating. Even if the thought of that is pretty gross too.
âWhâ And what would I do if I had his number, Takeru?â Uncle Tooru says, exasperated.
Takeru shrugs. Itâs not like heâs ever asked anyone out before.
âDunno. Text him? Shouldnât you know? You had a girlfriend that one time. How did you get her to date you?â
âWhat girlfââ
âThe one that dumped you and you got all depressed about it.â
âIâ That wasâ Sheââ Tooru tries and gives up. Then he groans. âTobioâs just⊠different, okay?â
âBecause heâs a dude?â
âI meanâ Not just that?â Uncle Tooru is making a weird face. Like he canât really believe that heâs talking about boy feelings with Takeru.
Takeru canât believe that this is happening either. And he really wants to go back to playing on his phone, but he feels bad if he just leaves Tooru alone, so he tries to cheer him up.
âWell, heâs really cool and all, but you know, youâre not that bad either. And you play for the national team too, even if itâs for another country, so like⊠He probably wouldnât say no?â
âTakeruâŠâ Uncle Tooru kind of looks like he might cry. Takeru hopes he doesnât and is already preemptively moving away. âWhen did you grow up so much!â
And then Uncle Tooru is holding his arms out to hug Takeru, and heâs so fast that Takeru canât avoid it, and itâs really not that bad actually, even if heâs blushing from his uncleâs words.
Uncle Tooru,â Takeru asks when the hug has gone on too long, âcan I go now?â
Tooru lets him go, smiling at him.
Takeru picks up his phone and starts to look for his mum, but stops before he leaves the room entirely. Uncle Tooru is on his own phone now, looking at a picture of something.
âUm. Good luck, I guess?â
Uncle Tooru laughs and waves him away.
tooru shows up to the next family gathering with tobio in tow AS HIS PARTNER and takeru is sooooo starstruck and cannot stop talking to him and hovering around him actually and tooru is like psst buzz off i wanna spend time with my boyfriend but takeru is like
YOU WOULDNâT HAVE A BOYFRIEND IF IT WASNâT FOR ME
and then maybe tooru has to tell tobio the story about how his nephew helped him realise he had feelings for tobio and tobio is chuckling and tooru is: enamoured while takeru is: starstruck
tobio, beautiful and handsome: haha. i guess i have you to thank for then, huh, takeru?
takeru: t-thereâs nothing to thank me for omg kageyama-senshu you are so cool i watch all of your matches and can i just ask you how in your last match did youâ
tooru, pushing takeru aside: okay okay this is not an interview donât you have some homework or something to do?
takeru, grumpily stomping away, muttering to himself: stupid uncle and his stupid stupidness.
tobio, later: heâs sweet.
tooru: he's a brat.
but really tooru is really so glad that they get along đ„ș his family and his most important person đ„șđ„șđ„ș
