Makram was distracted from him by the Sultana's arrival. She walked beside her father, her arm linked through his, and when she saw Makram she smiled. It was a real smile, the kind he imagined she might bestow on a friend. Her eyes were bright with it, her expression warm and lovely. Void and stars. His chest constricted; his hands twitched. Kadir detected his change in mien and turned. The smile disappeared, her gaze flickering to her father instantly to hide that she had been looking at Makram. He felt robbed, and tried not to glower when the Grand Vizier focused a predatory smile on him. "She is not for you, Agassi," He hissed, fire in his voice and its heat in the air around them. "Do not even begin to think that Tamar will allow its only heir to be given away to Sarkum trash." "No? Only Tamar trash?" Makram said. "Spare me your threats and speeches, please." That he had let his attraction be so obvious to someone so vile was infuriating enough. He would not also endure a lecture that told him nothing he didn't already know. Only by a choking grasp on his will did Makram hold his temper and his magic back, preventing Kadir from seeing how impotent his threat was. When the Sultana reached them her gaze traveled over him, warning him. It made him realize how tense his body was, and he forced it to relax. pg.154-155
