boy o boy i don’t really use this account to post much art anymore bUT i felt the neeeeeeeeed - the neeeeeeeeddddddd to redraw this bad boy from ages ago!!! and upgrade from sketches to digital art too yeehaw~
here is - yet another - fanart of @not-poignant‘s character, Kabiri!
((i kinda started rereading Game Theory, and will be continuing to reread CoFT soon after hurhRKkr my dear heart can’t handle such beautiful writing and lovely characters,,,))
"Now tell me, what is Davix trying to do?’ ‘He’s just changing his mind, is all,’ Kabiri said. ‘He did something a very long time ago, and now he’s trying to reverse it.’ (from the Masque chapter) AHHHHHHHHHH again! We've *just* learned that they were trying to reverse the class system! And I was all surprised in TIP but Kabiri's said it aaages ago! Dayum, Pia, you're just amazing
Yeah that was deliberate. Honestly, Kabiri has the pulse on quite a few things, there’s even been a few oblique references to dragons (and the fact that he’s always been meddling in the fae realm in the first place because Olphix and Davix have already harmed him so much by removing the dragons).
I really enjoy writing him as a character, and oof yeah, I’ve known for a while that the class system was false. Probably since I had to start really defining classless fae and why they existed, and I sat down and really thought about it, and asked myself ‘well what if this was created, and it wasn’t just a ‘just because and we don’t understand it’’ deal? So that one I’ve probably known the longest, though I didn’t always know who created them, and whether it could be changed.
So some like, history stuff I’ve known aspects of, and I describe a facet of it, and then the rest of the gem appears to me, and thankfully by then, there’s already a facet of foreshadowing that still works for me (this works great for character too, I didn’t know that Gwyn was Unseelie for a long time, but he still reads as concealing he’s Unseelie, because I knew he was hiding something really big. Sometimes, if you’re building a long story and you want to give yourself room to move later, you describe a facet of a thing, and have to trust that the thing itself will reveal itself to you like it will to other people).
Writing is weird.
Are Kabiri and the Gancanagh gonna appear again in TIP? I'm worried about the poor guys
There are plans for Kabiri to definitely reappear, but no plans for him to have any significant role in the plot, beyond his connection to Eran. So he’s not gonna come Deus Ex Machina in or anything (unless I change my mind later on, lol). But he’s done that enough, I don’t want him to do that in the climax of this book like he did in Game Theory. And I always wanted there to be consequences for him doing things like that anyway, which is why even though he’s had a really strong influence over the backbone of the plot several times, he’s now SUPER sick.
As for the Gancanagh, there’s actually no concrete plans to have him return. He might? But it’ll depend on if there’s room for him, because he was never supposed to be a long-term character in this story. The way his grief hangs, and the way Ash is connected to him being left hanging is sort of in its own way, a deliberate thing - to make it clear that Ash has so many unresolved storylines of his own, and is never sort of allowed to shine in the narrative beyond a support / antagonist / antihero role.
It’s...god this is weird to explain, but it’s meant to feel a little uncomfortable, for people who especially like Ash, or who want to know more about the characters around Ash. A sort of...push towards the realisation that the narrative doesn’t really ever do justice to him, and maybe one of the reasons he’s starting to fall apart in a meta way, is he never gets to start and complete his own stories or arcs, so he’s always sort of...half-finished. Especially lately.
...That’s the weirdest thing to write in a while but look I had an idea I have no idea if I’m doing it well and I’m probably breaking writing rules in the process but basically if the Gancanagh comes back, it also probably won’t be a fun thing. He is heartbroken. He would just come back to be sad.
so.... is it awful that i kinda ship eran and kabiri lolol. also kabiri and gwyn, but that seems somewhat popular
It is definitely not awful, and unless you’re the same anon that sent me a post similar to this like a few months ago, you’re also not alone! There are other people out there who also ship Eran and Kabiri :D
Honestly, it is never awful to ship any permutation of something even if it’s not a ship I personally get behind. Shipping is why fiction exists. (I mean no okay that’s not the official reason fiction exists but it damn well is one of the reasons!)

The Ice Plague - Chapter 8 - Hand of God
In which Eran meets someone he never expected to meet in his entire life, and Gwyn wishes that someone would just fuck off already.

Is it bad that reading chapter 8 of the ice plague had me thinking about Kabiri/Gwyn? Even a little bit of Kabiri/Eran (although I'm hesitant there because Eran is not even really an adult in terms of far standards and Kabiri is an ancient god, huge imbalance of power). I always enjoyed Kabiri in Game Theory and COFT, but DAMN. I have a whole new appreciation. Swoon.
My friend, it is not bad, this ship has existed since Game Theory (really) and like, come join us. It is a tiny little ship but it’s a nice one and you can bet there’s a fire at least, lol.
Eran is an adult in the same way you’d consider like... a 20 year old an adult? Most 20 year olds consider themselves to be adults but they’ll still flail a lot about adulting things they’ve never done before, and they still need a fair bit of guidance (from parents, websites, strangers, teachers, etc.) And likewise, they just don’t have much life experience yet.
Though yeah, still a huge imbalance of power! It’d be interesting, since Eran is a top and Kabiri is too. Though I’m pretty sure Eran would just be happy to go along with whatever because, y’know, Kabiri and he loves Kabiri.
Tbh power imbalance is why I love Kabiri with anyone in the first place. That dude could do whatever he wanted. I have an excellent time imagining him topping Gwyn.
FUCK FUCK FUCK TEAM KABIRI MY GOOOOOD. There. Out of my system. I never thought I'd like Kabiri so much after like, one appearance? Lol. I love the way Eran talks about and to him honestly. I got aspects of all of their personalities (Gywn, Kabiri, Eran) way better. As always, great job and lots of love!
lskjfsa I am loving how many people are really enjoying Kabiri after the last chapter update? Especially after how things have gone with Kabiri in the past (more like team ‘fuck that guy but I guess an AU with Gwyn might be interesting’).
It was great to write him the way most of his followers view him. Gwyn’s like, extremely biased and soured towards gods in general. Like, you know, Gwyn has issues, given Albion keeps refusing demi-god status and demoted him, his father wanted to be a demi-god, and also just Gwyn’s general disgust when beings don’t stay where they’re supposed to stay. (In which Gwyn is very Seelie-ish about the rules.)
But it was good to finally show like - how Eran would be around someone he cared about (which is naturally pretty damned protective), how Kabiri is around his followers (which is also pretty damned protective, lol), and how Gwyn is around gods (which is like ‘go fuck off and die already’). Gwyn’s constant sniping was a lot of fun to write. He’s very cavalier around Kabiri. I think he’s still salty that he can’t just punch Kabiri in the face for what happened to his shoulder.
