Jonathan Van Ness joined me to talk about Getting Curious, the Netflix version of his podcast, which jumps from hair to gender identity to skyscrapers and keeps expanding from there. He told me the topics weren’t picked for impact at first, saying, “I just wanted to do the questions that I was the most curious about,” but the deeper he went, the bigger everything got. “You can’t tell those stories without talking about… the implications and intersections,” he said.
That even changed what the show became in real time. “I thought I was gonna go look at skyscrapers… and then the next thing I knew is that skyscrapers displaced tons of people,” he said. The whole thing runs on that instinct, following curiosity wherever it leads, even when it turns into something heavier than expected.
