Introducing MPEG-5
… If Versatile Video Coding (VVC), the new video codec under development by ISO/IEC MPEG and ITU-T VCEG Joint Video Experts Team (JVET), is the natural candidate to keep high the level of technical excellence as proved by AVC and HEVC, other kind of requirements from the industry are emerging.
… In addition, alternative codecs such as AOMedia AV1, developed outside the ISO/IEC and ITU-T domains are starting to gain traction providing both a royalty free licensing schema and very good performances in terms of coding efficiency.
… It’s however important that MPEG has recognized that an alternative should be built and made available as ISO/IEC Standard.
