N O B O D Y B E A T T H E B I Z The news broke that we lost this legend yesterday: 7.17.21... But I finally found the words to express my sentiments today. This guy was one of my first pathways into East Coast Hip-Hop.... And rap in general. I was living in Trinidad when I got my 1st hip-hop mixtape: A WLBS DJ Red Alert affair. On that tape were joints that became all time favorites for me: EPMD'S "So Wat'cha Sayin'", Public Enemy's "Rebel Without A Pause" and "Don't Believe The Hype" and so much more. Also included on that tape though? My first introduction to the phenomenal #BizMarkie on a funk ridden hit single entitled #NobodyBeatsTheBiz His legend, only grew from there and his biggest hit: #JustAFriend solidified it even more. However, the legacy that @officialbizmarkie left behind for me at a WAY TOO YOUNG 57 YEARS OLD is that you can do HIP-HOP on your own terms, and be ICONIC. He wasn't as charismatic in the way JAY-Z or Big Daddy Kane was or super lyrical like RAKIM or Kendrick Lamar was. But he was funny, down to earth, larger than life and had a signature voice and sound you'd spot ANYWHERE. Something that if you did it well enough, it was all you needed. Biz proved that, and then some. Rest easy BIZ. We'll miss you.
