am i the only one who like sees jonathans character beyond nancy bc that's a huge criticism i see for his character. that he's just nancys boyfriend. and like i agree the writers should've focused on him more individually but like i still see him if that makes sense.
s1 i see the misunderstood teen who's worried about his brother, blaming himself and carrying too much weight.
s2 i see him struggling bc he seems almost torn that the kid he's been looking after for 12 years is pulling away so he takes two days to give will space and helps nancy instead (bc why would he do anything for himself....)
s3 he's struggling with money and needing a job and his gf gets him fired and still carrying too much weight on his shoulders for a teenager his age while he's worrying about what to do with his future.
s4 the struggle continues bc now will really doesn't need him anymore. he's depressed bc he's losing his sense of purpose, considering throwing away his future to hold on to his past responsibilities bc that's all he knows.
s5 i think in s5 where all of these things he's been internalizing, still holding on to what he knows (nancy&family) until it boils over and he loses his gf and suddenly at his dream school away from everything he's been struggling with.
i mean i don't think the flaw with jonathan is that he has no character outside of nancy it's simply bc the duffers refused to give him any focus. the story is there. the character is there but for some reason it's all "implied" and off screen (like the discussion of him going to nyu would've been interesting. telling joyce he's staying with the family and her telling him no bc he needs his own life would've been such a full circle, satisfying scene for his character).
he's far more interesting than just nancy's bf and his character is there if you're looking at him. or maybe im just completely wrong and reading too much into it bc he's my favorite but i still think he's more interesting than just a bf
