I can't believe Netflix paid somebody to make a Stranger Things fanfiction, and they picked Fails of 85 over.... literally anything else.
This isn't an exaggeration. For those avoiding the show, let me give you the cliff-notes.
- Everyone is mischarictarized. Like, EVERYONE.
- It feels like they wrote the show using wiki descriptions rather than a firsthand understanding of the characters.
- Of course, Mike and Will have it worst of all.
- The character animation is uncanny and weird.
- Mostly because they tried to make it too realistic while keeping cartooney/stylized proportions. Can't have it both ways.
- The FX animation is genuinely great, though, and a lot of the color work is stunning.
- As an animation nerd, I have to give the show its props in that particular area.
- However...
- Nikki is your classic Mary Sue self-insert OC. Like, she could almost be a parody of the trope.
- She seems to have been created purely for the purpose of getting between Mike and Will while stealing the spotlight from all the characters viewers actually care about.
- Specifically, they take all the traits people like about S1-2 Mike (leader, protector, snarky, kind to Will) and give them to Nikki instead.
- And of course, everyone worships her except for Mike, who is painted as the bad guy for not doing so.
- Ironically, Mike ends up echoing the feelings of most viewers.
- They probably thought they were doing something clever there, but it really just makes Nikki even less likable.
- The plot is... okay? A bit contrived, and clearly not canon, no matter what they say, but it gets us from episode to episode.
- What's worse is the tone.
- They're clearly aiming for a younger audience with a softened 'whimsical adventure' vibe.
- But adventure was never something the party sought out. It was something that found them. Something they had to survive.
- In a way, this series seems to represent the 'final destination' of the tonal drift that ST has been going through since season 3.
- From a grounded, intelligent, horror-mystery series about kids to a whimsical children's fantasy show for kids.
- The fact that it takes place so close to seasons 1 & 2 chronologically only highlights this contrast.
- TLDR, It's bad fanfiction. Don't watch it. There's better stuff on AO3.
