People with planets in the 8th house may really struggle with secrecy. It seems that individuals with placements in this house either a lie a lot, lie about things that don't need to be lied about, or hold on to a lot of secrets that aren't even their own and could even lie to protect others. I feel that people with planets in this house are often mislabeled as distrusting because of this.
Of course, not every 8th houser is secretive, but a large number of them have, at some point, had to lie about something major in order to protect themselves. Many come from environments where telling the truth was unsafe, being honest led to punishment, chaos, or emotional outbursts, so lying became a way to survive or keep the peace.
Lying in the 8th house looks very different from lying in the 3rd. With heavy 3rd house placements, lying can happen out of compulsion, curiosity, irony, or even for entertainment. It’s mental, verbal, sometimes impulsive. But when an 8th houser lies, it’s usually rooted in self-preservation.
That doesn’t make it right or justifiable and it doesn’t mean 8th housers never lie maliciously, but very often the lying extends even to things that don’t need to be hidden at all. In many cases, it’s a trauma response. They lie to avoid punishment, emotional backlash, or reactions that may no longer even exist in the present.
It’s as if 8th housers get stuck in time. When they feel exposed, threatened, or emotionally naked, they’re pulled back into old survival patterns, back into the darkness even when the danger has already passed.
