Written for @flashfictionfridayofficial with the prompt FFF305 - divine questioning imagining the missing scenes before Wakamiya/Nazukihiko’s return to Yamauchi and the eventual employment of Yukiya to his household, who is only mentioned but hasn’t appeared. Yet. This is an alternate universe as I only conceived an idea that Nazukihiko might have worked in a restaurant as an apprentice due to his penchant for cooking, and other things. A bunch of head canons. Chisato Abe’s original works have been the springboard.

Three weeks before Wakamiya’s return to Yamauchi

Amidst the turbulence happening in the kitchen, there was something peaceful in the apprentice sous chef’s heart. Soon he’d go back to his hometown. As the true Golden Raven, the purpose he was born with would begin in earnest. From his colleagues no one suspected that he was not human, but another being from another realm altogether. One could say he was something close to a deity. Despite it all he’d leave this group of people without them knowing who he really was, but an eager, beautiful young man who fell in love with cooking and creating recipes.

He was preparing his utensils and a knife that he favoured when a pair of scurrying feet approached him. It was the pastry chef.

“Nazuki-san, do you have time? There is someone who wants to see you.” Out of breath, he led the young apprentice to the office. A familiar face greeted him.

“Old friend!” It was the Great Tengu, who everybody called in the Outside World as Jun Tenimura. A businessman. A middleman.

Nazukihiko, after closing the door, received the Tengu’s warm welcome. After they hugged, they both patted each other’s backs. Junten was a few centimetres smaller, with his short hair that was dyed a hundred times before, his round-framed eyeglasses matched his amiable face.

This time, his hair was dyed blueish that became indigo when the sun rays reflected the strands from the office’s glass roof.

“Did you find anything else?” Nazukihiko asked. A letter emerged upon his desk when he went to work to the restaurant a week ago. Feigning his ignorance, he read its content. The sender warned him that his life would be in danger if he planned to return to Yamauchi.

“A friendly reminder that you aren’t safe in the court as they aim for your head.” A foreboding statement concluded the letter.

I see a lot of people talking about YuTen but has anyone considered Junten?

Just think about the possibilities, the angst. And here’s the best part, it can totally work in canon.

Now you might be asking yourself, “wait. Didn’t Lu Ten die?” Thats what we’re told but imagine this.

Jun is a bounty hunter and finds Lu Ten's barely breathing body in the battle field and thinks this is her pay day. She’s found the heir to the fire nation, she can retire. However she needs to make sure he’s in good health before returning him. During Lu Ten’s recovery he is comatose for a few months and during that time June kinda grows attached to him because she’s been taking care of him. She calls him her “investment.” Once he wakes up there are a few different ways things could go from here and I will illustrate below…

It’s post canon after Iroh has opened his tea shop. One day he sees a little girl that greatly resembles his wife when she was a child but she’s all alone. Concerned for where her parents are, he follows her. He then realizes she's playing hide and seek and offers to help her find a good hiding spot where he knows her parents will be able to see her.

Shortly after he leads her to the hiding spot he decides to stick around in the corner to watch out for her just in case. It’s not long until her dad finds her. His back is turned to Iroh who is relieved to know she’s found.

But then her dad starts to tickle her and she starts giggling "Daddy!" and when her dad turns around Iroh's heart stops because it's his son, Lu Ten is alive.

There’s different ways this could go.

Option one: Lu Ten has amnesia and doesn’t remember who he is.

If it's amnesia, the scene would likely continue with apologizing for his daughter disrupting Iroh and thanking him for keeping an eye on her. “She does this a lot with spontaneous games of hide and seek.”

This would make Iroh realize that Lu Ten has no idea who he is which leaves him heartbroken but he is quick to adapt and decides to invite him and his daughter back to his tea shop as a way to get to know the man Lu Ten has become.

Option 2: He doesn’t have amnesia but was injured and comatose for months and during his recovery he came to realize he couldn't continue to play a part in a war that was causing harm rather than the greatness his nation indoctrinated him into believing the war was spreading.

Option 3: Lu Ten realizes who Iroh is but he is not happy to see him. Iroh doesn’t know why but Lu Ten wants nothing to do with him. But he quickly explains that even though he knows Iroh has changed he can't forgive him for the atrocities he's caused to the earth kingdom and asks he leaves him and his family alone.

Let me know if you want more of my ideas! I have plenty for this pairing. I’ll give you a warning though, Zutara plays a major role in their story.
