My 2016 Resolution #2: Save Water
What should we save water?
Even though the earth is covered with water, we can drink only about 1% of it. That’s a very very small quantity for so many people and all living beings! The rest is salt water (the kind you find in the ocean) or is permanently frozen and we can’t drink it, wash with it, or use it to water plants.
Therefore save drinkable water as much as you can.
How Can You Help?
As a Junior Explorer, it’s important that you know some smart tips to save water every day.
When brushing your teeth, turn off the tap. This can save at least 2-3 gallons of water!
When you shower for less than 5 minutes, it can save up to 1000 gallons of water in an year.
When you’re helping your parents water the garden, use a watering can rather than a hosepipe. This saves almost 265 gallons of water in an hour used by the pipe.

Keep Your Kids Learning All Summer Long
Without the kids in school, it might be a little daunting to keep them entertained AND learning all summer long. Fear not! We have some helpful tips to keep your kids brains and bodies active this summer!

Read every day!
Building your child’s reading skills is important. Without the structure of school, your little one might not have as much structured reading time over the summer. Set up a nightly ritual of reading a book with your kids along with solo, or near-solo, reading time during the day.
Plan a trip to a museum.
Museums are a great way to introduce kids to art, history and science. Greatmuseums.org can help you find museums in your state and town. Want to ramp up the fun even more? Plan scavenger hunts within the museum so your kids are excited to search for and learn about the incredible objects inside!
Schedule active time outside.
Quiet study and still playtime are not the only ways for kids to learn. Giving children time to run around and exercise their bodies is also a great way to exercise their brains! While kids explore outside, they will uncover interesting things, play imagination games and stay healthy and active so they can focus when it’s time for structure reading or writing.
Do some crafts.
Crafts are a great way to teach kids the values of creativity, learning-by-doing and even going green to protect the environment. Check out some of our past blog posts for great eco-crafts, like our Earth Day crafts or these panda crafts.
Grow a garden.
Summer is a fantastic time to plant a garden! Plus, gardening is a fantastic way to connect kids to nature while teaching them the science of how things grow. We’ve assembled some tips for gardening with kids on our Pinterest. Check them out to get started!
Try Junior Explorers!
Junior Explorers is a fun, exciting program for kids that teaches them about wildlife and nature. Introduce your kids to ecosystems and animals around the world without leaving your home! Through a monthly kit that arrives at home and an online experience that takes kids to visit a diverse ecosystem, Junior Explorers teaches kids about conservation, wildlife and the biomes of the world.
Transporting Family Fun Outside
Summer is the perfect time to take your favorite family traditions to the great outdoors. With little effort and planning, you can shift your kids activities to your backyard or a local park. Celebrate the season and connect your kids to nature!

Arts & Crafts
Have you ever thought about moving your child’s easel and brushes outside? Set up in the shade of a tree or lather on sunscreen and let the beauty of nature inspire your little one! Think picnic meets arts & crafts. All you have to do is pack the supplies, set them up on a table or blanket, and collect any litter before you leave.
Story Time
Reading by the pool, on the beach, or in the park is a wonderful luxury! Stimulate kids’ minds while connecting them to nature by reading outside. You can move your afternoon book to the yard in the shade or take your bedtime story to the porch for quality reading time in the fresh air.
Games
Instead of playing Hide and Seek, Imagination Games, and Duck Duck Goose indoors, why not pick one game to play outside? With room to run around and explore, your children will appreciate everything that nature has to offer. Always remember to drink a lot of water and wear sunscreen when outside in the sun!
Family Meals
Plan an outdoor meal to share nature with your entire family. Check out our guides to hosting an Eco-Friendly Picnic or Sustainable Grilling to enjoy your meal outside. You don’t need to go far to connect your kids to wildlife & nature.
