I like sayjin a lot
I’ve been re-reading some chapters and I noticed something interesting. In the scenes that Juni criticizes Sayeon she does so telling her about how a single mistake may lead to one of her cellmates dying and how she shouldn’t be fixated on earning points. Most important of all, I remembered an old post from Sleepacross about how, before joining the Corps, Juni used to be an ace student in her school.
So I understood, this is another situation of “people assume of others what they know about themselves”.
Everything that Juni tells Sayeon is what she thinks a younger her should have been told and warned about to not make some terrible mistakes. It is quite possible that Juni, when she was acting as her cell’s leader, made some bad decisions during missions while in the rush to get promoted to level 5, which led to her friends dying. She thinks Sayeon is doing the same mistakes and is doing her best to stop her from doing so.
What she doesn’t realize is that:
- Sayeon does not have a need of perfection due to normal insecurities (or whatever influenced Juni pre-corps, although we don’t know how her life was like). Her perfectionism is rooted in heavy trauma with her criminal family.
- Sayeon is not obsessed with gaining points just to climb the hierarchy, she has greater plans to reform/control the Corps as well as personal goals of revenge.
- She is not ignorant of the possible death of her teammates and is not prone to momentary mistakes thanks to her Gift. (Although that might not help her forever and someone could die.)
So TLDR: Juni sees and treats Sayeon as if she was her younger self while what she should be doing is treating Sayeon as a younger Captain Han.
