sometimes i go back and watch the behind the scenes meet the cast video for the original game just to hear the only character rami mentions aside his own character being sam’s and mentioning hayden in conjunction. jossam it always circles back to you, jossam you will always prevail
cw for remaster spoilers here but i love the way sam’s new ending for the epilogue is obviously meant to parallel josh at his worst. showing that they are like two sides of the same coin, (also let me be a little bit giddy about the fact it’s only sam and josh specifically who have new endings - jossam you will always be the best characters) they are like ying and yang and clearly need one another to try and balance out, like scales, they rely on one another and seek comfort in each other. a connection. pieces of the puzzle that fit perfectly together. without the other they’re lost.
i like to think that josh grew up listening to bands like my chemical romance (in fact i’m going to say that they’re one of his favourite bands of all time because this is my echo chamber and i get to make the rules!) and because sam was interested in every little thing josh would mention or show her, she couldn’t help but be influenced by his tastes and immediately went out to buy their cds. so imagine little sam circa 2005-2006 listening to my chemical romance for the first time and becoming immediately smitten because it has the josh association with it plus the music is brilliant so two birds one stone for our little sam. josh and sam never “grow out” of the phase and always listen to mcr together and maybe post mountain events listening to demolition lovers hurts sam just a little more deeper. salt in the wound. no thanks to you gerard way! you’ve got sam giddings crying alone to herself at 3 am with her german shepherd whining at her feet because her fur baby too can sense the distress

love realising upon my hundredth until dawn rewatch that there is no "subtext" between jossam, it's literally just text. it is plain text. it is in your face about it. there are so many parallels between jossam and chris/ashley that it's ridiculous, they're quite literally knocking you over the head with it. sam's "they are very sweet together, i just wish they'd get on with it already" and josh's "they need a traumatic event to send them into each other's arms" is so obviously meant to mirror josh and sam, it's not just about chris and ashley. it's so clear to me that they're also talking about themselves, josh and sam aren't really aware of this - but the game is, the writing is. even down to the way they close others off from trying to weasel their way in their heads (i'll be your mirror).
josh says, "you notice how i gave chris and ash a mission together? i was thinking they could use some alone time." while josh and sam are the ones alone together is not lost on me, and of course when josh brings up the fact that sam came back to the lodge, this is their alone moment (of course, before everything else he's got planned) but he needed his moment to talk to her like that, one on one, to specifically thank her. the game is quite literally rubbing it in your face that these two have something together. hence "i thought we had a connection" at the very end of it all.
jossam is canon and the game says so too thank you & goodnight!
i don’t know who else noticed but during josh’s hallucination scene in the cave there is a new josh voice line! when the hallucination of beth asks josh why he didn’t save them, in the original game it’s “i didn’t want you to die, i swear.” and it cuts off there, but in the remaster josh says “i swear i tried to find you.” my heart is so broken. i am not sure if that was a deleted voice line from the original game or if rami actually did some new dialogue for the remaster but boy is it powerful. oh josh </3
9 years later and josh/sam are still THE couple of until dawn. i love it here
