Hi! Introduction time! My name is Judit Just, I’m 32 years old, I'm from Barcelona but I've been living in Asheville for almost 5 years, where I create all these woven tapestries. I wanna talk about something y’all been asking me a lot lately, how I started weaving. Back in Spain I studied Fashion, then Sculpture and also Textile Art, but I learned weaving because of my mom. I remember her learning how to weave when I was little. Later on, she taught me all the weaving skills and I did my first tapestry when I was 11 years old: a quirky little elephant standing on a fuzzy field of flowers. It started as just a hobby, I never got any real formal education on how to do them and I never thought it would be what I wanted to do with my life. But I started to notice that I brought it with me through my studying days, and I started to incorporate it into projects in fashion school, and then in sculpture, and it was what pushed me to study textile arts where I learnt how to weave on different harness looms. When I was finishing school and doing my textile arts final project, we made the decision to move to the US and I started to sell some homework on my shop online. I really pushed myself to sell whatever I could before moving, weaving swatches, embroidered jewelry or some experimental tapestries. It just so happened that some people would ask me for variations of previous pieces that I sold and then I began to get more inquiries. This is when I realize that I could do this full time in the States. After some time and perseverance, it suddenly exploded just at the beginning of this “weaving wave” that’s been going on for the last years. I often think that it worked for me because I was there at the appropriate time and how all these elements combined helped me arrive here. Without internet I couldn’t be doing what I’m doing or I couldn’t be making a living out of it. Thank you all so much for all your love, support and for keeping my hands busy!
