In a significant move to strengthen India’s judicial system, the Union Cabinet has approved a proposal to increase the number of judges in the Supreme Court of India from 34 to 38, including the Chief Justice.

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed that a bill will be introduced in the upcoming Parliament session to formalize the expansion. Once implemented, four additional judges will be appointed—aimed at improving the court’s capacity and speeding up case hearings.

The decision comes amid growing concerns over thousands of pending cases in the apex court. With more judges, the formation of additional benches and faster resolution of complex constitutional matters is expected.

This reform is seen as a crucial step toward reducing judicial backlog, ensuring timely justice, and enhancing the overall efficiency of India’s legal system.
