Jubal Valentine (FBI/Daredevil AU) - Chapter 4
Despite popular belief, your cases are usually more relaxed.
This most recent one has ended on a good note. You were able to get a settlement from an insurance company that was taking advantage of an old woman with a lack of knowledge in law. That’s where you came in.
“I’m sure we all can admit that this is a win on both sides.”
The lawyers on the other side of the table were disgruntled, but had folded. In a matter of minutes the room is cleared and Ms. Kenneth gives you a big hug. Foggy laughs and Karen is wearing a smile.
“Thank you so much.”
You nod.
“Remember to file with the new company and you’ll be alright.”
She nods happily, giving you a few more thanks before she’s out the door with the biggest smile.
“Another win for the star team!” Foggy cheers.
You giggle, both hands on your cane. When you hear the jingle of the door, you turn. The familiar scent of cologne catches your attention and you can almost feel Foggy’s grin. He gives you a little nudge and you shoo him as the man walks in.
“Agent Valentine, to what do I owe the pleasure.”
He smiles.
“I’ll never understand how you do that.”
His voice is playful and you just smile.
“I’m actually here on official FBI business.”
“Sounds important.”
“It is.”
He reaches into his pocket, pulling out an envelope. When he opens it and hands it to you, you’re a bit surprised.
It’s in braille.
Your fingers glide over it and you lift your brows.
“An instructor?”
Jubal nods.
“The FBI is always looking for the best. OA reminded me how well you are in the field, so when a position opened up I thought you would be a good choice. The pay isn’t bad and we’re flexible with the hours. You can cover part time for our new recruits as well as trainer programs. What do you say?”
“Heck yeah! The FBI would definitely owe us one.” Foggy declares. Karen laughs and you shake your head with a chuckle.
“I’m assuming you’ve told your superiors that I’m blind.”
“What! You’re blind? Why didn’t anyone tell me?”
You laugh at Jubal’s dramatics. He steps closer, leaning in to whisper.
“Between you and me, they’re kind of eagerly anticipating that yes. OA went on a tangent and now they think you have superpowers.”
It’s a funny thought.
You fold the sheet of paper.
“I’m in.”
Jubal claps his hands together.
“That’s what I like to hear.”
The invitation was actually a nice gig. Nelson and Murdock was doing well, but you weren’t one to turn down extra income. Especially since Foggy pretty much begged you to take the position. When you showed up for your first day, you could hear a few murmurs from the recruits when they saw you fold your cane.
OA was the one who did introductions and Jubal stopped by to make sure your first day went smoothly.
“This is (Y/N) Murdock, she’ll be your new instructor.”
A few of the men laughed, especially when you took off your glasses.
“Is this a test? She’s blind.”
OA just nodded with a smile of his own and advised you to start whenever you were ready.
“Well, as Agent Zidan said, I’ll be your instructor. Don’t be afraid to come at me. I promise I’m not just a pretty face.”
You winked, placing your bag down. Your glasses were now laying at the top of the bag along with your cane. When you straighten, you slide your hand into your back pocket pulling out a blindfold.
Jubal’s brows furrowed and OA seemed just as curious.
You tied it around your eyes, and confusion was written on everyone’s face.
You stepped to the center, taking a stance.
“Alright, I’m ready when you are.”
Your head turned to the right.
“Six.”
You did a mental note, tracking weight, heartbeats, breaths. No one made a move, you could hear their hesitance.
“Well, if no one is coming, guess I’ll have to give some incentive.”
You rushed forward at the first man, and the kick you delivered to his stomach knocked him to the ground. The other five were now weary, and someone did try to tackle you, but you side stepped, grabbing his arm and twisting it behind his back.
He grunted as you shoved him to the floor. This time, two others came, and when you used the first as a boost and hooked your legs around the neck of the other, maneuvering your body, he barrelled to the floor at the shift in weight.
You were upright again, a grin on your lips.
“Are you two just going to stand there?”
They didn’t attack, not at first. But the taunt seemed to egg them on.
The first punch you evaded easily, grabbing his outstretched hand as you wrapped it around his neck, using his body as a shield to block the other. He’d attacked just as aggressively and ended up sucker punching his partner who groaned in pain as you released him, pushing him forward. Both bodies hit the ground.
You lifted your fists, ready for any more attacks, but it didn’t seem necessary. You could only hear the echo of pained sounds throughout the room. OA was staring in surprise and Jubal clapped.
“Good job.”
You laughed, sending a thumbs up.
When word got out of that first session, recruits started lining up to practice. You earned a name for yourself.
Later that week you were leaving around the same time Jubal was. He caught you in the elevator.
“If it isn’t daredevil.”
You grimace playfully.
“I really hope that doesn’t stick.”
He laughed, pressing the button and you nodded in thanks.
“Isobel thinks you should start your own business in self defense.”
“I don’t think I’d have the time to manage both of my businesses.” You joke. The doors open and he offers you his hand. You take it gratefully.
“You know I can get around just fine Jubal.”
“Maybe I just like walking with you.”
The simple teasing made you blush despite your need to hide it. When you both first met you knew he wasn’t aware how capable you were. Now you’re appreciative. Not just for the job opportunity, but his kindness that has never changed.
“Thank you Jubal, really.”
“I should be the one thanking you. The bosses seem to think you’re a secret weapon. Keep up the good work.”
You laugh and he does too, walking you out the building.
