Silvaineaux was well aware he bore a number of unfortunate nicknames, generously bestowed on him by his fellow knights. He had keen hearing and they were not particularly quiet in using them among themselves. He did not like them, they rankled and they prodded at things he was sensitive about in precisely the way they were meant to.

By the time he and Joyeux found their way back to the stable the sound of those nicknames had half stolen the glow of victory he’d felt over the triumph he had managed at the ring game. He wanted water for his brave bird and a moment’s respite from the grating of other’s voices. He’d walked Joyeux to the far end of the stable in hopes of that quiet.

And it was more peaceful there, with only the sounds of birds stirring in their stalls and one of the young grooms leaning on his fork rather than using it. He straightened as Silvaineaux came in, though not with any terrible haste. “You want your bird put away, Odd-eyes?” He asked insolently.
