Arlo Parks last night at the breathtakingly, gorgeous Fox Theater up here in Oakland! • My third time with Arlo and her songs are so so special. Full of warmth, comfort, grief, real people, food, solace, & sunbeams. She sings about fighting depression, about ways to “make the black dog go away…” I heard the same from @genesisowusu last week in Boise (an admonition scrawled across a banner to beware of black dogs!) and when Genesis and his dancers are able to shake this black dog, the ensuing dancing (Arlo is fond of “stomping” all over!) is as joyful & free as anything I’ve been a part of. I reckon that black dog is the same one @joshritter is running from when he conjures ways to “stop the beast in its tracks…” That feeling that you just gotta keep moving, gotta get up out of bed, go to the corner store, buy some fruit, etc… There is powerful, medicinal magic in this thread of songwriting so deep within me, and it really does help me. Especially when I too feel like Arlo when she muses “it’s so cruel what your mind can do for no reason…” • Thank you for these songs Arlo!
