In which Jessica makes her tumblr into an HR blog...
Okay, so I was rereading some posts the other day, and I realized that most of my tumblr and el jay from the last year has been 1.) discussions of employment and how to work with coworkers and 2.) pictures of cats. Ā So I guess, the internet.
So things have been ⦠weird at work recently. Ā Itās the summer, and Iām used to everything in admin slowing down in the summer, so I think itās partly that everyone is at a loss for what to do with themselves, and so theyāre filling the space with awkwardness. Ā And also we have a massive grant application outstanding until October and, to be perfectly honest, I have no idea how it would affect my employment if itās rejected, so Iām guessing everyone else is doing the same math. Ā But even those things aside, I feel like all of my coworkers have become just a little bit schizophrenic in the last couple of months. Ā Both the director and my manager have had days where theyāve been berating me over something minor one second, and then as sweet as anything the next.
The most recent - and by far most peculiar - iteration of this theme came this morning, when I came in to work to find a lengthy email from my irritating coworker (with whom I share an office, and with whom I have been irritated since nearly my first day), explaining why he had been so rude to me for the last six months (tl;dr - he thought I didnāt like him, that I thought he was stupid, that I was trying to get him fired, etc.). Ā I wrote him back a very brief thank you saying that I appreciated his honesty and wanted to work with him to improve our professional relationship.
But itās been a day and Iām still pretty WTF? about the whole thing. Ā I want to take him at his word, but at the same time, it feels very passive aggressive - he didnāt actually talk to me directly about this, he didnāt address any of my concerns, and more or less assumed that he knew what was going on in my head. Ā All and all, it feels a lot like the self-help book my mother and I were planning, āHow to save your marriage without bothering your husband!ā
Iām also a little afraid that the whole thing will bite me in the ass, as he can now comfortably claim to have āfixedā the problems with our professional relationship, so any problems moving forward can be blamed on me. Ā I know that sounds paranoid, but everyone has been acting so squirrelly recently...
Bleg. Ā The whole thing is giving me a panic attack. Ā
I know Iām also just stressed, as in physically stressed - my flat isnāt air conditioned; I finally broke down and bought a window unit, but it wonāt be here until tomorrow, and I realized this weekend that since it heated up, Iāve basically been living with heat stroke whenever Iām home. Ā It also means I havenāt been sleeping well, which also sucks, so hopefully Iāll feel better after I have air conditioning and can sleep through the night.
