“My lord...?” Satin finally managed to whisper, voice thick with awe and something else he couldn’t name. Jon blinked at him blearily, lost and unsure, and tried to speak once more without success. His foot lurched forward in a wrenching, aborted motion like he needed to remember how to move them. But it didn’t matter. He was alive. Truly and gloriously alive.  

“He and Jon ran the Pavane one last time. Jon led him through it with ease, moving him from rotation to three-point turn to spin with practiced familiarity. Satin could barely believe he was dancing tonight with the same man who had bruised and battered his feet just a week hence. Satin hummed the beat for them again – bum bum bah, bum bum bah dum ba – as Jon spun him out and back in, pressing palms together, pulling in and then back out. When the dance came to an end, Jon smiled at him and Satin returned it, still holding frozen in the final tableau with hands clasped. Satin watched him catch his breath, letting the moment linger just a few beats longer than he should have.

Finally, Jon stepped back from him and bowed deeply, gracefully, like the lord he was and Satin could not help but laugh. He took the hanging fabric of his cloak and used it to imitate the skirts in a curtsey, as any fine lady would do at the end of a dance. It earned him a laugh from Jon, hearty and free and light.”
