19-year-old Fiona Apple's debut studio album was released on 23 July 1996.
Apple had been signed to a recording contract in 1995, after a friend gave Apple's demo tape to a Sony studio executive Andy Slater (who the friend babysat for). Slater would go on to produce Tidal and bring in musicians including Jon Brion (and would produce Apple's next 2 albums), Matt Chamberlain, Sara Lee, and Van Dyke Parks.
Tidal was released to critical acclaim and would go on to sell more than 3 million copies. It is considered to be one of the best albums of the 1990s (Rolling Stone, Slant), and one of the best debut albums of all time (Rolling Stone).

okay, so jon brion is my favorite composer. he did the soundtrack for eternal sunshine, paranorman, ladybird etc. i was listening to kings crossing by elliott smith and i heard a hook that sounded so similar to me. i couldnt place it at first but i KNEW it was a jon brion song. come to find out its this, one of the most beautiful songs on the paranorman soundtrack, on any soundtrack really. i know theyre both long but if u listen closely to the middle parts they follow the same chords! im so excited to make this connection lol. come to find out they collaborated before he died!!!! im so sad but ive always associated their sounds and now i know why! đŠ
