you have probably never heard of this theory before bcs i made it up in my brain (and then wrote a summative essay on it also)
eating the sacred cattle of the sun is cannibalism and odysseusâ men all die bcs they kinda. eat themselves. but the death of the men is doubled w the death of the suitors and also Both sets of deaths revolve around Eating Rituals Which Have Gone Wrong (the suitors eating odysseusâ stuff eats away at his identity as Owner Of Stuff on ithaca in a vaguely cannibalistic way says bakker in his very good book on Meat in the odyssey). the murder of the suitors is Also doubled w polyphemus eating odysseusâ men, loosely in that both episodes have a guy come home and get pissed at people for eating his stuff and then kill them, but also! both episodes compare the returning guy to a lion in a sexy metaphor, and in both metaphors it is Unclear where the hhhghghg lion stops and the uhhhh heâs covered in blood from Actually Eating People starts. also consider odyssey 22.21 (tr. wilson) âthe bread and roasted meat were soiled with bloodâ...... nice. basically the subtext is there and ive just decided to take it as text bcs it makes the hashtag problematic (âwas odysseus right to kill the suitors???â) ending of the odyssey Weirder And SexierÂ
