“Hey,” Charlotte finally said, and Juliet tried not to compare it with Kate’s greeting. When Juliet finally looked at her, Charlotte said, “So, no hard feelings?”
It wasn’t exactly an apology. Juliet had to think about it, though. Not because she was seriously considering holding a grudge against Charlotte. Maybe she’d just hope to see her squirm as she waited for an answer. Instead, Charlotte widened her eyes impatiently. That unapologetic quality actually convinced Juliet.
“No, it’s okay, I’ve had worse,” Juliet shrugged despite the ache pretty much in her entire body.
“Really?” Charlotte asked, sounding genuinely curious.
It wasn’t too often lately that someone asked sincere questions about Juliet’s life. That could’ve been what convinced her to answer honestly.
“Kate,” Juliet replied, completely failing to hide her fondness at the reminder of what should’ve been a terrible and painful night that had somehow earned a very affectionate spot in her memories.
“Of course,” Charlotte answered with a laugh that raised alarms in Juliet’s mind.
“What do you mean?”
“You and Kate. You’re obviously together.”
“Excuse me?!”
